Job summary

The Director of Flying Training (DFT) Media and Communications Officer sits within the Plans pillar, which is designed to deliver business change initiatives, focussing between the 18 month planning horizon and long term projects. The role will be responsible to DFT to define and continuously improve the Communications Strategy and Plan.

In line with Air Command's longer-term strategy to move to a hybrid working approach, it is envisaged that the opportunity to work from alternative locations will continue where possible, noting that business requirements will govern attendance when necessary. This will include travel to DFT HQ in Bristol as well as other RAF and Ministry of Defence establishments nationally.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week

Job description

The post-holder's key tasks and responsibilities are:

  • Maintain and develop the UKMFTS Communication Strategy and Plan
  • Develop proactive media plans as part of the Communication Strategy and Plan campaign work
  • Lead on drafting proactive and reactive media content in support of the Air Secretariat
  • Develop digital content including developing picture/video libraries and creating engaging social media content
  • Keep on top of the news agenda
  • Work with colleagues at all levels
  • Review or Proof-read communications to assure DFT that the content is factually correct
  • Coordinate visit requests
  • Conduct other duties as required that are appropriate to the scope of the role and grade

Person specification

The essential specific professional skills, knowledge and qualifications for the post are:

Computer literacy: Microsoft proficiency - Outlook , Word, Excel

Social Media sites: Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn

Digital skills and a strong social media interest

Attention to detail, good proof-reading skills and ability to adapt writing styles for different channels

Capability to be a self-starter but also a team-player that can work closely with colleagues

Selection process details
