Job Description

The Charter High School for Law and Social Justice provides students from the Bronx with a comprehensive High School education and lay the academic and social groundwork for success in college and careers. Using a theme of law and social justice, the School will engage, inspire, and empower students and will equip them with the academic skills to earn a Regents diploma and gain admission to the college of their choice, prepared for success. The School will create a pathway for its students to law school and careers in the legal field. The path will include mentoring opportunities with law students and attorneys and partnerships with institutions of higher learning. These institutions will offer college and law school experiences to our students and share with them the academic benchmarks and habits necessary to gain entrance to college and law school.Our mission, along with our core values, ground and drives the work that we do. Our core values are: Excellence * Character * Courage * CommitmentThe Reading Intervention Teacher provides targeted instructional support to meet the literacy needs of struggling students through small-group instruction. The role requires the ability to build trusting relationships with struggling readers and foster a supportive learning environment to achieve growth in our students’ literacy.The ideal candidate is adaptive in nature, has a positive approach to hard work, and is relentless in their pursuit of seeing every child become a reader.This position is responsible for planning, monitoring, reporting, communicating student progress and performance, and collaborating with general education staff.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONSRequired - Bachelor in Education.Required - NYS Teaching Certification in Special Education or a related field.Required - At least two years of prior teaching experience.Masters in Secondary Education or a related field preferredAt least two years of teaching experience in 8th grade or high school.Demonstrated success working in non-traditional and/or urban school settings.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Experience with educational technology (SMARTBoard, Student Laptops, etc.)Willingness to learn and grow professionally.RESPONSIBILITIESEssential ResponsibilitiesAssists with identifying students for placement intervention groupsPlan and deliver high-quality small group instruction that meets the targeted needs of scholars (decoding/ fluency/comprehension)Administer ongoing reading assessments to monitor the progress of intervention effortsCollaborate with classroom teachers, as needed, around teaching reading and supporting students in the mainstream setting and best classroom instructional practicesCollaborate with other Reading Intervention Teachers to ensure programs support each other and align appropriately across school divisionsLead or co-lead literacy-focused professional development sessionsUses identified research-based interventions focused specifically on individual student needsMaintains data-based documentation of continuous monitoring of student performance and progressProvides data to school teams and participates in indecisions about student progressCommunicate with teachers, administration, and families regarding student progressParticipates in meetings with teachers, administration, and families to discuss student placement and progressProvides diagnostic assessments for students as neededAttends the appropriate training to improve knowledge and skillsPerforms other related duties as assignedSkills and AbilitiesAble to work independently and in a self-reliant mannerAbility to turn best practices into high-quality, goal-driven resultsAbility to apply instructional strategies on differentiationAbility to collect data and make course placement recommendations for studentsDisplays effective time management skillsExperience with data management tools, organizational tools, and computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook).Possesses strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills to communicate with a varied audienceEEO STATEMENTThe Charter High School for Law and Social Justice provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment.
