The Role


The Medical Policy Advisor role provides support to the Medical Policy Lead, Senior Medical Managers and Medical Assessment Team in the following key areas:


  • The development of policy and guidance material for the purpose of aeromedical certification.
  • The communication and provision of medical policy and advice to internal and external stakeholders.
  • The delivery of the Medical Regulatory Safety Management System.

This is a hybrid role; the successful candidate will be required to attend the office 2-3 times per week.


Core accountabilities


Development of policy and guidance material


  • Assist with the identification of areas where policy or guidance material needs to be reviewed or provided.
  • Assist with the identification and organisation of resources, such as literature, and data to inform policy development.
  • Arrange and support meetings of medical assessors and external consultant advisors for the systematic production, maintenance and review of medical policy and guidance material.
  • Support the Medical Policy Lead in rulemaking activities, for example, the preparation of mandates, papers and briefing materials.

Communication and provision of medical policy and advice


  • Provide support to the Medical Policy Lead in developing the presentation and navigation of the medical pages on the website in partnership with communications specialists.
  • Ensure that policy and guidance material published on the website is accurate and up to date, liaising with communications specialists as required.
  • Assist with the communication of policy and guidance material changes to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support the Medical Policy Lead in responding to policy questions and in providing advice.

Medical Regulatory Safety Management System (Medical RSMS)


  • Provide support to the departmental Safety Risk Panel as required by the Medical Policy Lead, including arranging meetings, ensuring relevant intelligence and data inputs, and maintaining the actions and decisions log.
  • Support the Medical Policy Lead in ensuring medical risks and actions are considered in the wider CAA context and framework.

About You


This is a fantastic development opportunity and will suit a graduate in biological sciences or similar discipline. Knowledge, skills and experience relevant to this role include:


  • Knowledge and experience from working in a scientific, medical, or healthcare environment.
  • An understanding or experience of evidence-based policy making.
  • An understanding of the principles of safety regulation and safety management systems.
  • Ability to deal with sometimes complex problems and issues, with the appropriate level of support.
  • Ability to prioritise and make appropriate decisions, but able to identify when to refer issues to others or when insufficient information is available.
  • Ability to assimilate and communicate technical decisions and information on a wide range of topics and safety issues.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, able to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including technical specialists.
  • Comfortable using standard office software, for example, Outlook and Microsoft applications, ability to pick up new software and systems.

What Can We Offer You?


You will be working in the CAA’s busy medical department, which responsible for regulating and implementing medical requirements for professional flight crew, private pilots, air traffic controllers and cabin crew.


Medical policy and guidance are the basis for medical certification and fitness decisions made by the CAA’s medical assessors, approved aeromedical examiners and other health professionals involved in the certification process. It is an exciting and dynamic field, reflecting developments in medicine, whilst at the same time maintaining flight safety.


As Medical Policy Advisor you will have the opportunity to work with other teams in the department and with policy specialists in other areas. You will also have contact with the aeromedical examiners and medical certificate applicants, who are key external stakeholders in our activities.


Additional Information


For many appointments within the CAA, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.


To be vetted we will usually expect a reasonable period of residency in the UK so that meaningful checks can be undertaken.
