Within Discovery Scientists we are growing our capabilities in Functional Genomics (FGX), a group responsible for the identification and validation of novel targets to support AstraZeneca’s clinical pipeline. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist to join our expanding team within FGX, to help support the identification and validation of novel targets and grow AstraZeneca’s clinical pipeline.

We are seeking an exceptional Research Scientist in the Phenotypic Screening team where we are focussed on the discovery and validation of novel drug targets. Following the acquisition of Alexion, we are looking to apply our discovery capabilities in the rare disease space, meaning this is a great opportunity to be part of something new.
This is a laboratory-based role, where you will work closely with other members of the team to build arrayed cell-based assays and screening workflows using the latest technology such as CRISPR. Whatever your level of experience you’ll have every opportunity to acquire the practical and academic skills needed to put you on a path to becoming a true expert in the field.
Essential skills and experience

Masters’ degree / MPhil (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent industry experience

Demonstrable ability to solve scientific problems and troubleshoot technical issues

A strong background in cell biology – experience working with primary/complex models of disease, ideally coupled to the use of CRISPR to interrogate gene function

This highly collaborative role calls for outstanding communication and team working skills, with a desire to learn
Desirable skills and experience

Experience in plate-based assay development and or/cellular screening technologies

Experience in the rare disease field

Currently based at our Darwin building on the Cambridge Science Park, the Functional Genomics team are excited for their pending relocation to our brand new, pioneering R&D facility - The Discovery Centre (DISC). Located at the heart of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the DISC is designed to play a central role in our mission to deliver life-changing medicines to patients. As our largest research and development centre in the UK, it will have more than 2,000 people working across therapy areas and drug discovery and development once fully occupied!
