Job Description
We are a renowned multiservice law firm committed to access for justice. Our lawyers specialise in criminal defence, family law, housing, civil liberties and human rights. We are a Legal 500 and Chambers UK recommended firm who are currently recruiting a Legal Secretary to join our Family Team in our East Dulwich office.
This is a full-time position with the successful candidate being part of a dynamic and growing team.
Responsibility:
For typing all correspondence, memoranda, court documents, file notes, statements, questionnaires or any other document whatsoever that may be required by any Fee Earner or Senior Member of the Administrative Staff in addition to assisting generally upon files as required by any fee Earner.
Duties
- To type the above from audio tapes, or otherwise including copy typing.
- To ensure that all work typed is correct with regard to spelling, punctuation and grammar, and is neatly presented.
- To ensure that proper copies of all typed work, where appropriate, are kept on files, in the places, including correspondence spikes, which office procedures require, and in particular to ensure that proper copies of all documents sent from the office, whether typed or otherwise, are kept on files.
- To ensure that, where appropriate, photocopies are made of any document either by use of the photocopier in person, or by delegating the task to the officer Juniors, in accordance with office guidelines and procedures from time to time in force.
- To do such filing as may be required from time to time.
- To deal with the maintenance of files as may be required from time to time, including the setting up of documents folder, internal files or otherwise neatly arranging files as may be directed from time to time.
- To deal with such telephone calls whether incoming or outgoing, including telephonic contact with clients as may from time to time be required, either intermittently or regularly.
- To keep appointment diaries for any Fee Earner or any Senior Member of the Administrative Staff as may be required.
- To deal with clients and others visiting the office as may be appropriate, including taking messages and arranging appointments.
- To assist in reception or on the switchboard from time to time, as may be required.
- To ensure familiarity with the working of all computers, photocopiers, fax machines or other office equipment normally used by a secretary.
- To deal with such routine maintenance of such equipment as might normally be expected of a secretary.
- To ensure that equipment faults or breakdowns are promptly notified to the Practice Manager or their substitute for the time being.
- To ensure compliance with all office procedures as laid down in the Office Manual including any variations or amendments.
- Whilst the above represents the main duties and responsibilities it may be necessary from time to time for the smooth running of the office, for all Members of Staff to undertake any task for which they are qualified that may be undertaken by any other Member of Staff in a solicitors’ office
Skills/Knowledge:
You will acquire and/or maintain the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to perform the duties set out in this Job Description/Specification.
- Fast and accurate typing skills with a minimum speed of 65 w.p.m.
- Must be able to spell and punctuate correctly with a good grasp of the rules of grammar.
- Clear and precise written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to cope with the pressure and demands of working in a typing pool environment.
- Ability to familiarise yourself with the rules and procedures relating to the organisation and administration of the office.
- Computer skills and the ability to use the hardware and software applications in use in the office.
- Be fully conversant with the Office Manual.
- You will acquire and/or maintain the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to perform the duties set out in this Job Description/Specification.

This position pays £21,547.50 with a Living Wage bonus of £1,755.00 for the financial year 2023/2024 for a 37.5 hour week.
