Job Description

About the role:The Chief Addiction Medicine Adviser is responsible for providing strategic, system specific and specialised clinical leadership and advice to Safer Care Victoria (SCV), the Minister for Health, the Department of Health, and the broader Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), health service and hospitals sectors on issues related to addiction, drug use, harm reduction and dependency.The Chief is a key member of the SCV Senior Leadership Team and will work together with colleagues, as one team, to deliver the strategy of the organisation. It is not about your team and its deliverables. It is about a singular goal and mission, improving outcomes for the population of Victoria.The Chief is the principal adviser on all matters relating to addiction medicine and pharmacotherapy and for the provision of professional leadership and direction on this topic for Victoria.The Chief will oversee the development of policies and initiatives to support the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality person-centred care on behalf of SCV. Engagement with senior stakeholders and leaders across government and the broader health sector will be required. The role provides a link between SCV, the Department including Mental Health and Wellbeing Division and the broader medical community on matters in relation to addiction medicine and integrated care and the Mental Health Reform objectives as described by the Royal Commission into Mental Health.About us:At the Victorian Department of Health we want a future where Victorians are the healthiest people in the world. And to deliver a world-class healthcare system that ensures every single Victorian can access safe, quality care that leads to better health outcomes for all.How you'll make a difference:Provide high level authoritative, expert medical advice on substance use and addiction matters, to government, senior levels of management and external stakeholders on professional and clinical safety and quality matters.As a member of the senior leadership team of SCV, lead strategic vision of the organisation and direction, ensuring activities are integrated to achieve goals and priorities of the organisation.Supporting Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) policy and program development, and the development and implementation of strategic and legislative AOD reforms and identifying improvement priorities and opportunitiesWorking within the Department of Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing Division and sector to identify and provide strategic advice to Ministers, the Secretary, and the Deputy Secretary on targeted priorities to improve the AOD system and consumer outcomes.Provide high level leadership, vision, thought leadership and guidance to the medical professions by building and sustaining effective relationships with NGOs, health services and other internal and external groups. Act as a thought leader to promote discussion and debate regarding matters and issues of concern deriving from professional medical groups, the Victorian public health sector and cross jurisdiction agencies or Committees.Engage and liaise with senior executives from across the health sector, government and nationally to advocate for a position or viewpoint relevant to quality and safety improvement or to resolve conflict through negotiation or influence.Champion the learning health system and ensure that Victoria operates consistently as a learning health system, constantly seeking to improvement measurable health outcomes for the population.Suitable applicants will be able to demonstrate:Comprehensive understanding of the Australian health system and the Victorian hospital system.A deep understanding of clinical governance in Victorian health services with the ability to deliver strong and effective accountability for quality and safety across the state.Extensive experience in the AOD sector and detailed knowledge of the AOD services provided within Victoria.Demonstrated experience providing clear, concise, expert advice at the highest levels on complex and politically sensitive health issues.Advanced Training in Addiction Medicine.Fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine (FAChAM) is desirable.Specialist expertise/experience within the field of addiction medicine, drug use and dependency.Experience in guiding strategic directions for various AOD projects.To learn more please click ‘Apply' to view the Position Description on the Careers.vic website.What we offer:The opportunity to perform meaningful work, making direct contributions toward enabling Victorians to be the healthiest people in the world.A wide range of growth and development opportunities within the department and wider Victorian Public Service & Sector.A strong commitment to work-life balance, including a diverse array of flexible working arrangements.How to apply:Applications should include a resume and a cover letter.
