Canada's Success.Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's largest research and technology organization.We are looking for a Research Officer, Electric Motors to join the London team and to support the Automotive and Surface Transportation Research Centre. The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.We are seeking a candidate to advance electric motor research at the NRC and development the next generations of electric motors. This candidate will work in a team environment with other researchers and technical experts to develop, execute, and report on research and engineering projects pertaining to electric motor technologies in Canada.The work will focus on new electric motors based on advances in material manufacturing and innovative designs. The candidate work will specifically target the development of new methodologies to integrate, manufacture, assemble and test new electric motor topologies. The selected individual will work with colleagues across the country to help advance Canada's growing electric vehicle industry. The individual will also collaborate with industry partners and academic institutions in the development of new and improved electric motor systems. Some high-level examples of projects include:Development of high rotation speed motors for increased power density.Development of new motor technologies involving advanced cooling.Development the use of non-rare earth motors.Screening CriteriaApplicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:EducationPhD in Science or Engineering, such as mechanical, electrical, mechatronics or a related field.A Master's degree in a related Engineering field may also be considered.For information on certificates and diplomas issued abroad, please seeExperienceExtensive** R&D experience in the field of electric motor fabrication and/or integration and/or in a connex field such as electric vehicle integration.Significant* experience of prototyping and implementing research concepts (e.g., novel concepts developed by self or as part of a team, or concepts described in technical papers).Significant* experience of mechanical design an integration of electrical componentsSignificant* experience with magnetic materials such as permanent magnets and soft magnetic materials and their use will be considered an asset.Significant* experience in securing funding in the context of competitive calls for proposals and publishing research in conferences journals and/or IP-generation would be considered is an asset.*Significant experience is defined as two (2) to five (5) years of experience.**Extensive experience is defined as five (5) or more years of experience.Condition of EmploymentReliability StatusLanguage RequirementsEnglishAssessment CriteriaCandidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:Technical CompetenciesSolid knowledge of electric motor topologies and principles.Ability to understand, critique and develop solutions to complex electrical and mechanical problems.Ability to solve technical problems (hardware & software) in both self-directed and team environment modes.Ability to prototype and validate performance of electric motor or equivalent complex mechanical or electric machineKnowledge of CAD software.AssetsKnowledge of electric motor assembly techniques would be considered an asset.Ability to define specifications for equipment procurement in a R&D environment would be considered an asset.Knowledge of magnetic simulation software would be considered an asset.Understanding of the electric vehicle system would be considered an asset.Behavioural CompetenciesResearch - Partnering (Level 3)Research - Networking (Level 2)Research - Initiative (Level 2)Research - Teamwork (Level 2)Competency Profile(s)For this position, the NRC will evaluate candidates using the following competency profile:CompensationThe intent of this hiring action is to staff this position at the ACRO or SRO level, which is a mid-career to senior level position with a salary range of $114,753 to $161,258.NOTE: Please note that the full has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate's expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level.
