Job Description

The Physician Assistants (PAs) work as part of a multidisciplinary team to assist MFM physicians in providing a broad range of medical services and acts as a physician extender to assess, analyze, prioritize, plan and evaluate care. The PAs will work with both in and out patients. The PAs, under the direction of the supervising physician, will assist in the assessment, care and management planning of newly referred MFM patients in the outpatient setting. They also will also be involved in providing ongoing outpatient antenatal care for these patients. The PAs, under the direction of the supervising physician, is responsible for providing direct patient care to inpatient antepartum and postpartum obstetrical patients including daily rounds and addressing stable acute medical issues. Care in these areas will involve taking detailed focused histories and physical examinations, order tests, reviews results, complete progress notes and organize consults based on care plans determined with attending MFMs. It will also involve dictating consultations and identifying, preparing, coordinating and dictating discharges.Role descriptionThe Physician Assistant (PA), under the direction and supervision of the Division Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine will be responsible for providing direct patient care for Maternal Fetal Medicine patients. The physician assistant will assist with the care of both antepartum and postpartum patients in both outpatient and inpatients settings namely:Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic-4B1Labour and DeliveryLabour and Delivery Triage4C and 4B wardsWomen's Health ICU and Step-Down UnitThis patient care may include1. Completing comprehensive and focused health histories,2. Performing comprehensive and focused physical examinations,3. Performing procedures as determined by the MFM physicians,4. Developing care plans care in conjunction with MFM Physicians5. Providing counseling on preventive health care,6. Ordering, following-up on and interpreting laboratory or radiological investigations7. Performing controlled acts as delegated by a physician.The physician assistant will be expected toAdopt many of the roles that a Junior Resident would fulfill on a clinical teaching unitServe as a physician extender, for the Maternal Fetal Medicine Physicians.Assisting with outpatient organization of the clinical service,Co-supervise physician assistant studentsPerforming other tasks within the supervising physician's scope of practice that the physician deems the PA qualified to complete.The Physician Assistant is responsible for the following Outpatients care as determined by the MFM physiciansHistory and physical examinations of new consultations in the Maternal Fetal Medicine clinic and patients presenting to the labour and delivery triage area. Ordering of appropriate investigations and laboratory tests, tracking these results planning care appropriately. Requesting consultations with other specialists. Dictations of these consultations.Ongoing outpatient antenatal care of Maternal Fetal Medicine patients as well as ordering of appropriate further investigations and consultations that come from these visits and documentation in the health record.The Physician Assistant is responsible for the following Inpatient care as determined by the MFM physicians:Providing direct patient care to stable acute antepartum and postpartum patients,Daily rounds on antepartum and postpartum inpatients development of care plans with attending and/or residents and the interprofessional teamIdentifying, preparing, coordinating and dictating dischargesOrdering tests, reviewing results, completing progress notes, organizing consults based on care plan determined with MFMDocumentation on the health record A. Identified areas for further development-To assist in developing Medical Directives for the PA in particular allowing for prescribing of common medications, ultrasounds, x-rays, and ordering blood tests etc.REPORTS TO:Deputy Chief Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department Head Maternal Fetal MedicineClinical Manager of Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic and the Program Director Womens and Newborns CareQualificationsGraduate of the McMaster or Consortium Physician Assistant ProgramRequired-recent clinical experience providing direct patient care for Obstetrical patients and or related experienceRequired Current knowledge of the physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of pregnant women.Required: demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in health teaching of women with Obstetrical concerns.Ability to organize, prioritize and implement care in busy work environments.Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with other team members.Committed to lifelong learning and the delivery of evidence based care.As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to Employee Health Services.Hamilton Health Sciences
