Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, dynamic and self motivated librarian to join a small library team that is organisationally visible and provides a high quality healthcare knowledge and research service to over 5000 staff. You will be passionate about delivering an excellent user experience and driven to help improve the library's services and resources as part of our quality improvement programme and library strategy. You will need to have excellent organisational skills, be confident communicating with stakeholders of all levels of seniority in both 121 scenarios and in large groups. You will enjoy building cross functional working relationships with other teams and be capable of working on your own initiative and as part of a small team. To work as part of a small team providing information and library services to all users of the multidisciplinary library. The post holder will be the first point of contact for all library users, contributing to the delivery and development of knowledge and library services to North Middlesex University Hospital staff and students. In collaboration with the library staff, deliver training, user support and enquiry services to staff across the Trust. Together with deputising for the Knowledge and Library Services Manager, this post has a focus on supporting a quality improvement plan, development, organisation, and delivery of all library resources to the organisation. North Mid is part of North Central London integrated care system – consisting of the NHS and Local authority organisations in Camden, Islington, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. As with other ICS’s, we are working increasingly closely with partners and indeed many of our financial and performance objectives are measured at this system level. Whilst all organisations remain as standalone, statutory bodies we have an ICS infrastructure for making shared decisions and agreeing shared approaches. We are proud of our staff and want to ensure their training allows them to provide excellent clinical care. We are also a training unit for medical students from UCL and St George’s University Grenada, and for nursing and midwifery students from Middlesex and City Universities. Contribute to the delivery of library services to Nort Middlesex University Hospital Trust staff and students; and together with other Library staff deliver training and enquiry services to staff across the Trust. 2. Contribute to the delivery of a high quality enquiry service, using professional knowledge of appropriate paper, statistical and electronic resources to help users access the evidence required to provide high quality patient care. 3. Undertake searches of the healthcare literature to answer information requests from users, drawing upon an in-depth knowledge and experience of healthcare databases and healthcare terminology. This process includes clearly establishing the user’s information needs, selecting appropriate databases and other information sources, including the wider Internet, and formulating search strategies. Use analytical/critical appraisal skills to select relevant, good quality documents and resources. 4. In collaboration with the Knowledge and Library Services Manager and the wider Education team, develop and run training courses, design training materials and presentations that increase library awareness and train users in the search skills necessary to find relevant, quality evidence based information in support of evidence-based patient care. Evaluate user feedback regarding the quality and effectiveness of training delivered to ensure training is responsive to user needs. 5. Contribute to the development, delivery, and evaluation of current awareness services, to keep staff abreast of developments in their fields of interest. 6. Support the Knowledge and Library Services Manager in the stock selection processes, by identifying stock gaps, new editions of core texts and other items for acquisition and withdrawal. Consulting with library stakeholders as necessary. 7. Contribute to the library resources collection; the acquisitions process, cataloguing and classification of stock, weeding and withdrawal etc. Work with the Knowledge and Library Services Manager to ensure resources can be identified and accessed appropriately. 8. Responsible for raising requisitions, receipting, and processing invoices and ordering consumables, under the guidance of Knowledge and Library Services Manager. 9. Responsible to administering journal and library service renewals, including assisting with the ordering process of new resources and liaising with suppliers. 10. Participate in library marketing activities internally and externally, for example contributing to planning, creating material, presenting at inductions, manning marketplace stands, visiting departments, both onsite and in the community to raise the library’s profile. 11. Monitor IT equipment, identify problems and rectify them where possible, or refer them to the IT department if required. Provide user support on the use of MS office applications, intranet, and e-Learning (Phoenix). 12. Assist the Knowledge and Library Services Manager in improving and developing the IT facilities within the library and work with the IT department to widen the library’s reach and accessibility of library resources on Trust IT systems. 13. Responsible for ensuring general day to day site procedures such as opening and closing of library are carried out. 14. Independently and collaboratively build cross functional working relationships with staff and departments from across the organisation to proactively promote and advocate knowledge library services. 15. Participate in the day-to-day management of library processes, including document-delivery, loans, shelving, stocktaking, photocopying and inter-library loans. 16. Contribute to the development of the specialist librarian service within the Trust, promoting the service to staff on all Trust sites. Proactively identify and liaise with key members of the clinical and non-clinical teams to encourage use of the service. 17. Assist the Knowledge and Library Services Manager in attending clinical and other departmental meetings to provide the evidence to support patient care as required; picking up on information needs of team members and proactively offer literature searches and collect measurable impact feedback. 18. Liaise with the wider education team to proactively promote and educate nursing, medical students, and junior doctors on library resources available and appropriate to their needs. 19. Contribute to the creation and updating of a library procedures manual, so that all library staff are able to undertake all tasks and are aware of any procedural changes. 20. Responsible for receiving money for charged-for services and ensuring that the sales are correctly recorded, and receipts issued where required. 21. To be the Open Athens administrator for the Trust, resolving access issues, promoting its use, and providing user support. 22. To manage the issue, renew and return of books using the Library Management System (LMS) and ensure that all data held on the LMS is accurate and current. 23. Participate in management of the enquiry and issue desk, and maintenance of essential routines including operation of inter-library loan request service, sending out overdue, reservation and recall notices on the LMS (Koha). 24. Ensure that copyright, Data Protection, Trust IT policies, and other areas of legislation impacting on library users are adhered to by both library staff and library users. 25. Active involvement within the network of health libraries in NHS London and participate in special interest groups where relevant. Participate in wider networks and contribute to the development of library services. 26. Ensure own continuing personal and professional development by attending training sessions, study days and courses run by professional organisations such as CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) and NHSE. 27. Assist the Knowledge and Library Services Manager in implementing the Knowledge Mobilisation Framework, including participating in organising events such as Randomised Coffee Trials and supporting future Communities of Practice. 28. Deputise for the Knowledge and Library Services Manager in their absence, including representing the service at meetings and supervising junior library staff, as required. 29. Assist the Knowledge and Library Services Manager in the collation of complex information for the National Annual Statistical Return and the Quality and Improvement Outcomes Framework to ensure the library is compliant with national quality standards. 30. Participate and take ownership of agreed tasks and milestones, as part of the Quality and Improvement Outcomes Framework, Implementation Plan and library strategy, under the guidance of the Knowledge and Library Services Manager. 31. Assist in the administration, maintenance and collection of statistics, including activity data and detailed site-specific information, including impact statements. 32. Any other duties as outlined by the Knowledge and Library Services Manager in order to ensure that the performance of the library service is of a high standard.
