Job Description

Job title: Curator Apprentice

(Working towards a Curator Degree Apprenticeship (MA)


Locations: The Mercer Art Gallery and Royal Pump Room Museum in Harrogate and Knaresborough Castle and Courthouse Museum in Knaresborough.


Salary: £22,366 per annum


Contract: 30 months. 37 hours per week. Working 31 hours a week, with an additional 6 hours of learning time.


Qualification: Maths and English at level 2 (GCSE) or equivalent.


This is an exciting new role that will provide curatorial support to North Yorkshire Council’s Museums and Arts department in Harrogate, within the Destination Management Organisation. Working across the museum, gallery and archive services. The successful candidate will be provided with a structured training programme on site, working with Teesside University as the training provider for the Curator Degree Apprenticeship (MA).


Your role will include, but not be limited to:


1. Assisting with collection development and management (including acquisitions and loans).


2. Assist with research, development, installation and maintenance of exhibitions.


3. Undertake archival work of the Walker Neesam material related to the history of Harrogate.


4. Help to communicate to a variety of audiences, to ensure the collections and social history stories are fully accessible to the public at all venues including the Mercer Art Gallery, The Royal Pump Room Museum, Knaresborough Castle and at pop ups for external events.


5. Development of advanced curatorial skills as part of the employment.


6. Complete Curator Degree Apprenticeship (MA) in partnership with Teesside University.


The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by the organisation, which are relevant to your post within the company, to meet the overall business objectives. Full training will be given.

You must comply with your safety responsibilities and must co-operate with management in all respects for the full implementation of the Council’s Health and Safety Policy. Desired skills

  • Good IT skills - knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of people.
  • Experience within the cultural / museums / visual arts sector
  • Interest or experience in developing skills in visitor services and audience development
  • Interest in local cultural offer and local history
  • Willingness to undertake a structured training programme

It is essential you have a minimum of Maths and English at level 2 (GCSE) or equivalent. It is also required that you have appropriate experience within the cultural / museums / visual arts sector and interest or experience in developing skills in curating, visitor services and audience development


Expenses for the required travel to and from Teesside University will be covered by North Yorkshire Council throughout the apprenticeship.

The first day of learning with Teesside University for the apprenticeship is 28th September and the successful applicant must be in post and ready to attend on this date.
