There has never been a more exciting time to be part of the HR function within Department for International Trade (DIT); we are delivering on Government priorities against the backdrop of an exciting HR agenda that facilitates Trade, enhances our inclusiveness, and creates the space for people to thrive at work.

The People Analytics and Insights Team sits within the HR Directorate and is a key expert service for the wider function and Department. We are responsible for reporting and analysing data relating to 5,500 staff across the world.

Our work is varied and interesting, ranging from delivering centrally commissioned regular reports on our workforce, to providing insights based on bespoke analysis on specific topics of interest for internal customers. We work closely with related professions including analysts, finance and digital colleagues.

As part of the People Data Team, your role is critical in ensuring DIT has good quality information about the workforce. You will be responsible for supporting the data-driven workforce planning decision making, helping understand our international picture, and impacts of HR interventions through data.

Job description

This role is key to enable the HR Function deliver guidance and support across the department by delivering analysis and insights. You will be working with colleagues from across the department, mostly with the wider Chief Operating Officer directorate. There will be opportunities to develop wider HR knowledge, including International HR and the unique challenges which may be faced by overseas colleagues.

Your priorities will look like:

  • People data collation and analytics.
  • Monthly maintenance of cloud-based database.
  • Production of data outputs with SQL code from cloud-based database.
  • Deliver on the statutory and cross-government reporting requirements.
  • Deliver improvements to reporting processes.
  • Manage ad hoc people data queries from across the organisation, making use of consistent and accurate database.
  • Monthly publication of People Data Dashboard covering workforce and people-based analytics.
  • Stakeholder management; working closely with colleagues from related professions including policy, finance, and digital teams as well as external organisations such as Cabinet Office and Office for National Statistics.
  • Enhance wider understanding of the people data and the insights it provides across DIT.
  • Take an active role in delivering iterative improvements to the People Data offering.

Hybrid working

The role will be based in either Cardiff, Darlington or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Appointments will be made to candidates in merit order based on location preferences.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

  • Experience and skills in complex data analysis and interpretation.
  • Attention to detail and ability to appraise information and data.
  • Experience of data linkage from various data sets.
  • Experience of using Excel and SQL code.

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous work experience in producing people data reporting Experience and skills in using different programming languages, e.g. using R or Python to develop data dashboard.
  • Working in a team, with an ability to deliver independently at pace.

  • Strong analytical skills to produce accurate reporting and an ability to visualise data to ensure the findings are easy to understand and interpret.
  • Ability to draw from a range of data sets using Excel and SQL code.

In your personal statement, Please explain how your experiences and technical skills meet the requirements for the People Data Analyst role. Maximum word count of 750.

Vetting Requirements
