Job Description

Applications are invited for the above permanent full time post working in Digital Services as a member of the Desktop Services team.

Some of the duties will include working with the team to facilitate the procurement, deployment, support and maintenance of over 4000 computers within the University’s estate.

Candidates should be educated to 2 AS Levels or 1 A Level or NVQ level 3 in a relevant computer science or relevant subject area.

HND/HNC in Computer science (or equivalent) and have substantial experience in a similar role, including enterprise computer deployment solutions would be desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as possible.

The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable for this post.

Overview


Digital Services is responsible for providing, developing and maintaining IT facilities and services across the University and supporting staff and students to use those facilities and services. Digital Services has a good reputation within the University, providing reliable and resilient infrastructure, services, applications and facilities. We pride ourselves on being helpful, friendly, and responsive to user needs. Digital Services comprises circa 100 staff with its IT responsibilities set in three main areas: Corporate Systems, Infrastructure and Client Services.

The post for Computer Support technician in Digital Services will work with the Desktop services team (part of Infrastructure) providing support for all desktop computers throughout the University including deployment of software (purchased or developed in house), computer installation, setup and maintenance using enterprise deployment tools. Support cases will be assigned to the team by the 1st line helpdesk that forms part of the Client Services section of Digital Services.

The role does involve lifting, moving and configuring computer hardware at the Bangor campus and occasionally transportation between the Bangor and Wrexham campus sites.

This role also exists to provide second line IT support to users of IT systems and equipment in the university

Purpose of the Job

Desktop Services comprises of 5 staff including the team manager and are responsible for the supply and maintenance of the staff and student desktop/laptop, Open Access and lecture theatre computers for the University.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

    Support all desktop computers throughout the University including deployment of software, setup and maintenance using enterprise deployment tools; MicroSoft Configuration Manager, MDT, Intune and JAMF.
    Supporting end users and other Digital Services staff in the use of these systems through training as directed by the team manager.
    There will often be times when working outside the immediate team and department is required for assistance with projects or supporting university events.
    Setting up and maintaining Windows/Macintosh computers for use in offices, research labs and lecture rooms
    Assist with the evaluation of new hardware and software for suitability in our environment, provide recommendations and suggest alternatives if not suitable.
    This role also exists to provide second line IT support to users of IT systems and equipment in the university.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

    To work as part of a team under direction
    To take responsibility for completing designated tasks
    To attend team/School/Unit meetings; Supervision of equipment stores.
    Keeping records of equipment up to date in the systems provided.
    Knowledge of particular internal/external regulations, ie relating to the computer supply policy, information security and data protection policy and IT acceptable use policy.
    The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

    2 AS Levels or 1 A Level or NVQ level 3 or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
    Level 3 IVQ Technicians Diploma.

Desirable

    NVQ level 4 in a relevant subject area.
    Full Technical Certificate, BTEC, HND / HNC in relevant subject area.


Experience/Knowledge

Essential

    Able to demonstrate substantial working experience with Windows and Mac Operating Systems in a similar role.
    Experience setting up and maintaining Windows/Macintosh computers for use in offices, research labs or lecture rooms.
    Demonstrate the ability to contribute to computer purchasing recommendations on the Digital Services web site.
    Demonstrate the ability to follow operating procedures.

Desirable

    Knowledge of Enterprise Deployment Solutions; Microsoft Intune, JAMF, MS System Centre or Broadcom Altiris.
    Evaluating new hardware and software for suitability in our environment, provide recommendations and suggest alternatives if not suitable.
    Diagnosing hardware and software problems on computers and resolving them.


Skills/Abilities

    Ability to contribute to teamwork.
    Ability to prioritise own work and meet deadlines set by manager.
    Communication skills.

Desirable

    Hold a full driving license or able to demonstrate ability to fulfil travel requirements of the role through other means.

    The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role.
