SELCS-CMII is a world-leading centre for teaching, research and public engagement, focusing on the literature, linguistic traditions, history, sociology, philosophy, art, film and other aspects of the cultures associated with the languages we teach (Danish, Dutch, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Old Norse, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish). Our taught programmes are innovative, challenging and interdisciplinary; academic colleagues and students engage with many urgent concerns facing the world today by understanding Europe’s languages, cultures and histories and their global impact. Alongside programmes based in modern languages or comparative literature, SELCS-CMII is home to UCL’s graduate programmes in Comparative Literature; Translation Studies (CenTraS); Film Studies; Gender, Society and Representation; Race, Ethnicity and Postcolonial Studies; Health Humanities; European Studies; and Early Modern Studies. These attract large cohorts of Masters students every year, as well as a thriving community of doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. Staff are actively involved in interdisciplinary teaching and research within SELCS-CMII and UCL more widely, including the Institute of Education and UCL East, and in collaborations with various institutions in London (including the London Arts and Humanities Doctoral Partnership, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK) and internationally.

About the role

The post-holder will be required to convene and teach on existing postgraduate modules in gender and sexuality studies, as well as designing and teaching new optional modules according to both their specialisms and the needs of the programme. The post also includes key programme activities such as MA dissertation coordination and supervision, personal tutoring and contribution to research methods workshops. The post-holder will be an active member of the core programme team at an exciting time in its development, contributing ideas and expertise to shape the structure and direction of the programme in the future. As such, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to programme design, curriculum planning and innovation, e.g. developing new assessment methods. The post-holder may specialise in any aspect of gender and sexuality studies, but we would particularly welcome candidates with an intercultural or comparative focus in disciplines such as anthropology, cultural studies, history, human geography and politics. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates able to teach one or more of the following topics: race, gender and representation; post/decolonial approaches; queer/feminist ecologies; digital activisms and social movements. We would also welcome applications from scholars of gender who could contribute to teaching modules in the language and culture of Portuguese or Spanish (including Latin America). The post-holder will teach a full-time load in accordance with departmental and institutional policy. Depending on other responsibilities, this is likely to entail 250-300 contact hours per academic year, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to be determined in consultation with the Co-Directors of Gender & Sexuality Studies and the Head of Department.

About you

The successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of gender and sexuality studies as a multidisciplinary and intercultural field, sufficient to teach a range of related topics at postgraduate university level. They will have experience of teaching at postgraduate level in an area related to gender and sexuality studies, including both online and face-to-face teaching and learning and have been awarded a PhD degree in Gender & Sexuality Studies, or a related discipline. An experience of assessment of student work, using a variety of assessment approaches and the ability to manage time, work to strict deadlines and complete administrative tasks in a timely fashion is essential. The successful candidate will be able to work as team to design and coordinate teaching planning, as well as to train and manage allocated Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PGTAs) and to support their recruitment.
