We have an exciting opportunity for two Bioorganic Chemists to join our GSK Enzyme Engineering and Biocatalysis group based in Stevenage, UK.

As a bioorganic chemist, you will be responsible for supporting our work using novel enzymes variants for the synthesis of nucleic acid APIs with applications across the full GSK portfolio. Working closely with project teams, you would optimise synthetic reaction and isolation processes for complex oligonucleotide products and help support enzyme evolution programs as part of an interdisciplinary team of experts.

The role is fast-paced and dynamic, you will thrive in this environment if you are able to effectively manage multiple priorities, communicate your recommendations clearly and enjoy working in teams.

In this role you will

  • Be responsible for a wide range of activities supporting development of synthetic processes for oligonucleotide products.
  • Develop cascade and telescoped enzymatic routes to oligonucleotides
  • Optimise reaction conditions for efficient production of desired products
  • Work with colleagues from process chemistry to develop scalable and manufacturable processes
  • Work with engineering colleagues to optimise isolation of oligonucleotide products
  • Work with analytical colleagues to optimise characterisation of reaction products and reaction performance
  • Design experiments, collecting and analysing data using programs such as MS Excel, TIBCO Spotfire and bespoke software tools to inform decisions
  • Interact with partners in discovery, development, and manufacturing to identify and pursue enzyme opportunities
  • Generate conclusion reports, presenting data in team meetings & participating in writing of abstracts & publications
  • Conduct scientific work programs and making contributions both independently and as a member of a team with other R&D staff
  • Maintain customer focus, motivating self, and demonstrating a high degree of urgency
  • Exhibit flexibility, being open to new ways of working

Why you?

Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in chemistry or a relevant life science
  • Practical laboratory experience of the identification of enzymes to perform reactions of interest, and the optimization of those enzymes under synthetically relevant conditions

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Doctoral/PhD degree (or equivalent) in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry or related discipline OR Master’s degree (or equivalent) and relevant laboratory experience
  • Practical laboratory experience with enzymatic synthesis of (oligo-)nucleotides, nucleic acids
  • Familiarity with analysis of nucleic acid reactions to characterise kinetics, thermodynamics and reaction performance
  • Familiarity with isolation of nucleic acids from reactions
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams, displaying excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
