THE ROLE OF AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE SERVICE APPRENTICE TECHNICIAN
The apprenticeship is geared toward training the next generation of Electric Vehicle Service Technicians. But what does the role involve? The below explanation is a guide to support you in understanding what the role might entail.
Electric Vehicle Technicians service and repair light vehicles such as cars up to 3.5 tonnes. Technicians are trained in all areas of vehicle electrics, mechanics, and electronics. The duties of an Electric Vehicle Service Technician may include:
- Marking out & measuring using basic hand tools and equipment
- Service and inspection work covering the whole vehicle to appraise, maintain, and repair systems
- Carrying out regular maintenance of customer's vehicles to ensure that they stay reliable and safe
- Working with vehicle body materials and units
- Engine mechanical work covered in service and repair procedures
- Cooling systems, lubrication, air & exhaust work
- Repair and diagnosis of Ignition petrol/diesel fuel systems
- Working on vehicle braking systems to assess the condition and carry out repairs to ensure vehicles are safe
- Checking and repairing vehicle suspension and steering systems including wheels and tyres.
- Checking and diagnosing vehicle charging and starter systems including all electrical auxiliaries and lighting
- Carrying out work on clutches, manual/auto gearboxes, drivelines
- Work with High Voltage vehicle systems to service and diagnose faults (After formal HV training is completed)
- Carry out vehicle charging of high voltage vehicles before the vehicle is passed back to the customer
WORKING WEEK
A typical working week could be 40 hours Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.30pm.
All learners will be required to work the minimum apprenticeship duration of 30 hours per week. At least 20% of your working hours will be allocated to ‘off-the-job’ training. We’ll support you to understand the working hours during the recruitment process.
YOUR DEVELOPMENT
Our Apprenticeship Programme is an excellent way of ensuring we have high-quality people working within our group. We’re looking for ambitious candidates ready to take ownership of their development, work hard to achieve their potential and grow with an ambitious employer.
The Programme lasts up to 36 months and you’ll achieve a nationally recognised qualification as an AutoCare Technician (Level 2) & Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) Level 3, which includes Electric Vehicle training at Level 1 & 2.
All of our apprentices are employed by Baylis and attend block training at our state-of-the-art Vauxhall Performance Academy in Centre in Coventry.
Block training is complemented by a combination of regular coaching visits from one of our experienced Coaches as well as Virtual Classroom sessions and E-Learning modules.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Age: 16+
Prior Attainment: GCSE (or equivalent) grade A*-C or 9-4 in Maths, Science and English. Predicated grades are accepted.
‘Equivalent’ grades include:
- BTEC first diplomas and certificates
- OCR Nationals
- Key Skills Level 2
- NVQs
- Essential Skills (Wales)
- Functional Skills Level 2

Your application will be assessed by the Recruitment & Selection Team against the Entry Requirements specified for the role. Please upload your CV with a covering letter of why we should consider your application.
If you are successful in your application you will be invited to participate in a short telephone interview. Candidates are then shortlisted again and will be asked to complete a range of web-based assessments appropriate to the role that you have applied for.
Finally, candidates are invited to have a tour of the dealership and a face-to-face interview. This may extend to a second interview and in some cases a working trial.

Salary: £5.00-£9.00 per hour in the first year. Rising as you gain experience.
