Ground Transportation Systems UK (GTS) are helping to shape the future of the rail industry in the UK. We specialise in communication and signalling, partnering with the biggest names in the rail industry to deliver the rail of the future. This role will transition to Hitachi Rail as part of the transfer of ownership of GTS from Thales.
Our Opportunity
We are currently looking for a Data Scientist to join us at GTS to work in a full, end-to-end data role, encapsulating the full data lifecycle, from building data pipelines to visualisations and everything in between.
In this role, you will be responsible for developing algorithms and analysis that delivers value from our data, developing intelligent algorithms using machine learning techniques that provide key capabilities to our customers, and working with our data engineers and software engineers to deploy these models into production.
Our data team is still in its formative stage so this is an excellent opportunity to influence the shape and structure of the team as we grow it over the next few years.
This role is based from our office in Cheadle, Manchester.
Key Responsibilities:
You will be creative in finding the right solution to solve a particular problem, and methodical in demonstrating the real world value of the approach. You will create interactive dashboards to efficiently visualise our data and allow the whole organisation to understand how our data driven solutions are improving operations for our customers.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Work with large, varied and complex data sets. Solve difficult, non-routine customer problems using state-of-the-art data science and machine learning techniques
Work with customers to understand their business challenges, where data is understood to be a likely source of improvement drivers, relating back to their business needs
Extract value from data – create dashboards and algorithms that actively support our customers
Work with the entire team to understand the customer requirements and deliver solutions to meet them
Interact cross-functionally with a wide variety of people and teams. Work closely with engineers and product managers to identify opportunities for design improvements to Thales products
Work closely with Thales Research & Technology to develop new techniques that can provide state-of-the-art capability to our digital products
Technical Skills and Experience
Previous relevant work experience in a Data science or Engineering role including the following:
Data Extraction, transformation and loading / data pipelines
Data visualisation (Grafana, Databricks…)
Feature engineering
Model building and deployment
Monitoring and refinement of deployed models
Experience with statistical and machine learning software packages
Cloud Computing experience
Big Data Processing experience
Data Storage and Data Warehouse experience
CI/CD and Git
Experience turning customer requirements into delivered value.
Human Skills

Qualifications:
Degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., data science, statistics, operations research, computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, industrial engineering)
