Job Description

. The post holder will work independently, in varies locations across the city to provide a timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective phlebotomy service for maternity patients.

2. The post holder will support the timely processing of patient samples.

3. To be part of the maternity team offering a 5 day service, between the hours of 08:30-16:30

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

1. To provide a venepuncture service within the Trust in accordance with UHP and departmental policies and procedures.

2. To report as soon as possible to your line manager any problems that may arise.

3. To liaise with patients, carers, midwifery and medical staff in an appropriate and professional manner.

4. Informing patients of the venepuncture procedure to be carried out in a caring reassuring manner that is aimed at their level of understanding.

5. To undertake work for which they have been trained, which may take up to 2 months shadowing a trained member of staff.

6. Ensure suitable stocks of venepuncture equipment are available prior to visiting patients and replenish used stock as required.

7. Ordering required stock when stock levels are low.

8. Following standard operating procedures dispose of used equipment in a safe manner, reducing risks of needle stick injury to yourself and others.

9. Ensure that request forms for blood are correctly filled in with the minimum acceptance data present.

10. Ensure that all samples collected are correctly labelled and meet the acceptance criteria for the Pathology department concerned.

11. To identify bloods not taken and to hand this information over to the named midwife.

12. Have the ability to assess if veins are suitable for venepuncture, following standard operating procedures. Eg Avoiding Intra Venous/transfusion sites.

13. Recognise the needs of the patient, who may be very anxious or distressed due to the nature of their illness or the procedure, whilst being sympathetic and considerate towards them.

14. Will assist senior staff in the training of new staff.

15. Be familiar and competent in the use of Pathology computer systems iLAB & iCM for patient test request entry.

16. Ensure all Trust and departmental protocols are followed to maximise the control of infection within the clinical environment.

17. To observe all departmental, Trust, national and European Health & Safety regulations relevant to the service, ensuring attendance at the annual departmental H&S update. In addition all staff must sign the departmental H&S policy to acknowledge understanding and compliance.

18. To continually update your knowledge and skills whilst documenting this in your Continual Professional Development folder.

19. To ensure contemporaneous completion of your induction and training records.

20. To follow Standard Operating Procedures at all times.

21. To attend meetings and training courses as necessary.

22. To attend Statutory and Essential Update Training annually.

23. To attend departmental briefings and/or acquaint yourself with the team brief posted on the departmental notice boards.

24. To assist in the maintenance and compilation of workload statistics.

25. To participate in an annual IPR and achieve any targets set at this time.

26. Participate in all rotas required to provide a 7 day a week phlebotomy service. This will include taking part in the weekend and bank holiday rota as and when required

27. To carry out other duties commensurate with the post.

COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

1. The post holder will act as a mentor during the induction of new staff.

2. Key working relationships will exist between the post holder and the community midwifery management team, community midwifery team and all supporting MSW and admin colleagues.

3. Will attend or read the minutes of team meetings and department updates.

4. Patients, relatives, visitors and all other grades of hospital staff.

OTHER

1. The post holder will be required to work independently at times in a community clinic.

2. Dress and act in a professional manner at all times.
