Job Description

Job Purpose
This is a fixed term [up to four years or up until six months after obtaining CCT] Clinical Lectureship based mainly in Glasgow Dental School. Suitable applicants will hold a registrable dental qualification with the General Dental Council. The successful candidate will be appointed at the appropriate level of the Specialty Registrar scale and will be awarded a National Training Number by the Dental Directorate of NHS Education for Scotland.
The post will be based, in the main, within the Dental School in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, which is part of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences [MVLS] at the University of Glasgow, but for the purposes of clinical training, rotation to other hospital departments is required. Research and teaching may also be undertaken at other sites. To ensure the appointee can successfully complete their certificate of completion of training [CCT] this post will provide an exceptional opportunity for combined clinical and academic training. The person specification incorporates the requirements for appointment to specialty training in Oral Surgery and the appointee will take part in the full specialty clinical training and assessment process, including ARCP.
The post allows the trainee to combine first class clinical training in relevant clinical areas with research training, scholarship and teaching in the world class academic environment of the University of Glasgow. Clinical training is based largely within Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board but includes opportunities in other Health Boards, including Forth Valley, Ayrshire & Arran, Lanarkshire and Dumfries & Galloway.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Academic Duties
Research
The appointee will be expected to engage with other research-active academic staff members to assist in the delivery of the research strategy of the Dental School.
Teaching
It is expected that the Clinical Lecturer will take part in the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment. This includes teaching of clinical skills and other vocational training activities in the simulated and clinical environment, delivery of seminars, tutorials and lectures; assessment of students in the clinical environment; and examining in written, oral and OSCE assessments. The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing teaching commitment within the Dental School and will undertake scholarship and research that informs teaching delivery and innovation.
Administrative Duties
The Clinical Lecturer will contribute to administrative duties related to research and teaching as directed by their supervisor and will carry out relevant administration related to clinical training and patient care. Clinical duties will be arranged following discussion with the relevant Training Programme Director. The purpose of a Clinical Lectureship is to ensure that candidates acquire a CCT, and appropriate clinical training opportunities will be arranged to ensure that this can occur within the duration of the Lectureship. This may involve undertaking clinical duties in various locations within Glasgow and further afield.
Balance between academic and clinical duties
There will be a 60:40 split between clinical and academic activity. Academic support will be available during all annual research and training assessments to ensure that there is adequate balance between academic and clinical training.
Glasgow Dental Hospital and School
Glasgow Dental Hospital and School is situated in the centre of Glasgow. It is the main centre for specialist dental advice and treatment within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area. It also fulfils a similar role for surrounding Health Boards and serves a population of up to 3,000,000. The total number of chairs within the hospital is approximately 160. It is an undergraduate dental teaching school which is consistently rated one of the top schools in the UK and has an adjoining Postgraduate Centre and Primary Care Out of Hours treatment clinic. There are strong links between the NHS Dental Hospital, other hospitals in the region and the University of Glasgow. It has an excellent library with on-line literature search facilities.
Glasgow Dental Hospital and School comprises the following clinical departments: Restorative Dentistry: fixed and removable prosthodontics; endodontics; periodontology Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Paediatric Dentistry Orthodontics Dental Radiology
The Oral Surgery Department
The Oral Surgery Department has recently undergone extensive redesign and refurbishment and provides excellent facilities for outpatient oral surgery. The clinical areas within the Oral Surgery department provide out-patient clinics in the Oral Surgery Consultant Clinic (7 chairs), a Minor Oral Surgery Procedures facility for the management of emergency patients, student teaching and some minor oral surgery procedures such as biopsies (6 chairs) and a surgical facility for minor oral surgery with and without sedation, this incorporates 4 theatre-type facilities and a large recovery area. All aspects of Oral Surgery are undertaken including implantology and bone grafting. Our services are supported by new and state of the art services in oral microbiology and pathology and by our radiology service, with both ultrasound and CBCT available on site. We have good working relations with colleagues in all disciplines within the hospital but particularly with Oral Medicine.

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 BDS or equivalent dental qualification which is registrable with the General Dental Council. The appointee must be fully registered with the GDC by the time of post commencement.
A2 Be eligible to work in the UK.
A3 Have the ability to travel to sites as required in order to fulfil the requirements of the whole training programme.
Desirable:
B1 Possession of MFDS/MFD/ MJDF or equivalent from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges or other postgraduate dental qualification.
B2 Possess a higher degree or be in the process of writing up.
B3 Possess or be willing to undertake a postgraduate certificate in academic practice or similar postgraduate teaching qualification.
Experience/Training
Essential:
C1 Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UK Dental Foundation training programme or equivalent.
C2 Demonstrate the competencies required at the end of a UK Dental Core Training Programme Year 2 by either: - Evidence by time of post commencement of satisfactory Review of Competence Progression (RCP) outcome or programme completion/certification of a UK DCT2/3 post which commenced on or after August 2016. - National Certificate of Dental Core Equivalence (NCDCE) at the time of application.
C3 Evidence of experience in more than one dental specialty/clinical setting.
C4 Not have previously relinquished or been released/removed from a specialty training programme, except under exceptional circumstances.
C5 Not already hold or be eligible to hold a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in the specialty applied for and/or must not currently be eligible for the specialist register in the specialty applied for.
C6 Evidence of commitment to the specialty with clear career objectives.
Desirable:
D1 Experience of undergraduate and / or postgraduate teaching in Oral Surgery.
D2 Experience of research involvement.
D3 Record of publications in refereed journals.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be on the Clinical Academic scale £38,704 - £57,349 per annum.
The post will carry an additional entitlement depending on on-call responsibilities. This banding payment is paid under a separate arrangement with the NHS for which the University acts as paymaster only.
This post is full time and fixed term for up to 4 years.
