The above part-time (0.2FTE) permanent post is available with immediate effect.


The role

The University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS) is seeking to appoint a talented medical educator to undertake the post of Lead for Small Group Learning (Professional Development Groups). The successful candidate will be responsible for providing the operational management of the small groups component of the undergraduate medical programme (including recruitment, training/development, support and quality management of the team of small group facilitators based in Exeter, Torbay, Truro and Barnstaple.


This post is an exciting opportunity to design and further develop the small group curriculum. The small groups form an integral part of the BMBS curriculum, providing integration of clinical medicine with applied human sciences, public health, personal and collaborative learning, professionalism and leadership. Through discussion, debrief and reflection on clinical experiences throughout the five years, students learn in the small group sessions to understand and articulate the complexities of being a medical student and a future medical professional. The PDG tutor also acts as the personal tutor to each student in the group. The UEMS BMBS programme puts a high value on developing positive professional behaviour and a deep understanding of patients, health and disease and the many roles of a doctor. The small groups deliver a large part of this important aim.


Consistent with the concept of an integrated curriculum, the main aims of this element of the programme is to help students see “the bigger picture”, and the lead will provide credible, visible leadership for this part of the curriculum. This will require the post-holder to have a thorough working knowledge of current clinical practice and of the BMBS curriculum.


The successful candidate will work with the Directors of the BMBS programme including the Director of Professional Development to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of small group learning in accord with the Faculty’s education strategy. They will also contribute directly to teaching within UEMS and to the development and implementation of innovative teaching practices across the Faculty. A key responsibility will be to ensure that with the expansion of BMBS student numbers there is small group provision in all sites and localities. This will involve assisting in the development of the relevant e-resources, recruitment and training of facilitators and representation on the Professionalism “Integrative Learning Group“ and the BMBS Board of Studies.


Salary


If you are a fully qualified GP (on the GP register and GMC-registered with a licence to practice) there are two methods of payment:

  • Contract of employment: where practice payment is not appropriate.
  • Practice payment: this is paying for locum cover directly to the practice where you would normally be working whilst a PDG tutor. Paid on a termly basis.

If you are a hospital doctor (on the Specialist register and GMC-registered with a licence to practice) employed by a Trust, there are two methods of payment:

  • Trust payment: reimbursement to the appropriate Trust with the PDG tutor role included in your NHS job plan.
  • e-Claim: for providers who are attending the sessions in their own time (e.g. not coming out of contracted hospital time).
