Job summary

This post is being advertised as a Grade B3 to Grade B2 development role and is an exciting opportunity for candidates with a core understanding of CARIS software and related process who have a real interest and aptitude to develop their technical skills and capabilities, along with their wider skills in providing effective and appropriate technical support for customers.

The successful candidate will be given appropriate training, mentoring and support to build their role specific skills/capability, following a define development plan. Once assessed as being competent in the role the post holder will be promoted to Grade B2 – we anticipate this will be in the region of 6 months after starting in the role, but this will be governed by the successful candidate’s development.

This role sits in Production Engineering and Data Governance Group, within Operations Division. The team supports CARIS COTS, which is at the core of the UKHOs production system. The main applications are CARIS HPD, used to maintain and store a database of navigational data and to produce and maintain paper and electronic navigational charts from this data, and CARIS Bathy Database, used to maintain and store bathymetric data.

CARIS software has been extensively configured by the UK Hydrographic Office to meet its requirements and has also been integrated with bespoke workflow systems.

The purpose of the role is to support, maintain and improve the effectiveness of the CARIS suite of COTS software in use at UKHO and to provide relevant technical expertise and advice to users with regard to the use, development and integration of functionality, tools and changes within the CARIS application suite.

The team work flexibly but there will be times where onsite in Taunton is required to ensure effective collaboration across teams, system upgrades and resolution of incidents.

(Note - Support of Live systems may very occasionally include weekend and out of hours working)

Job description

On starting in post, the successful candidate will be introduced to aspects of the configuration and support of CARIS applications used at UKHO and the maintenance, testing and rollout of new releases and functionality of these applications.

On the job training will also be provided to introduce the post holder to use of the CARIS APIs and basic SQL querying of the HPD Database and using CARIS batch to run batch commands.

With appropriate support and development, the post holder will undertake the following tasks and activities in order to provide Systems and User Support for CARIS applications and other related Production Systems:

  • Incident & Problem Management - Monitor incidents and problems, prioritising and investigating as necessary. Help to resolve day-to-day technical problems, liaising with system users, other Technology teams and external software suppliers taking ownership of issues until the problem has been mitigated or resolved.
  • Change Management - Implement changes to CARIS applications following the appropriate change control procedures and configuration management
  • User focus - Advise on alternative process solutions where technical issues cannot be overcome and to identify system configuration changes that improve the production process.
  • Technical specialism - Assist in technical support activities and carry out routine maintenance and administration tasks. Provide technical support to projects and workstreams where CARIS software is used/planned and support to the Operations and International Training Teams.
