Job Title: MO19 - Conflict Management Dog (CMD) Trainer

Salary: £37,744 to £42,631 plus a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £37,744 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £42,631 will be via incremental progression.

Job Summary

A CMD Trainers main role is to support the CMD instructors who are responsible for the planning and delivery of all CMD Dog and Handler training along with maintaining training records. When unsupervised by a CMD Instructor trainers will only deliver continuation training. Further training and development will be provided and once the required standard is met will allow you to perform the role of a CMD Instructor.

Candidates should note that they will be required to work within MO19 CMD training which takes place across many sites within London, Kent and Essex and at times may be required to train at national training sites which may require overnight stays.

Candidates for this post should be aware that the nature of the role requires the candidate to display patience, problem solving, resilience and excellent communication skills. There is an expectation that the successful candidate will not only be able to recognise good practice but will also be required to identify training problems, write comprehensive written reports and instigate development plans for colleagues (dog and handler) who do not achieve the required standard.

The role requires the delivery of courses for new CMD, Handlers and continuation training for both. Candidates should be advised that there are limited opportunities in this specific role for flexible working opportunities.

The successful candidate will work 36 hours per week spread across 5 days normally working Monday to Friday 07.00 to 15.00 hrs but may be varied owing to demand.

This is a physical and demanding role, and you will be working in sometimes extreme weather conditions. You will need to confirm you are physically fit and free from injury that precludes you or will potentially prevent you from performing this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Procurement of dogs
  • Initial quarantine and assessment of new dogs
  • Initial training of dogs
  • Initial training of handler
  • Initial training of dog to handler
  • Continuation training of both dog and handler
  • Licence withdrawal for both dog and handler for training or operational concern
  • Working alongside National Firearm Instructors for joint training.
  • Recording of dog and handler training hours
  • Recording of dog training records
  • Ensure training hours for both dog and handler are complied with
  • Maintain and improve effective dog handling capabilities
  • Enhance and improve dog training methodology
  • Enhance and improve operational disciplines and methods
  • Build and maintain relationships with external agencies with similar disciplines of dogs
  • Understand and comply with relevant Health and Safety legislation with regards to dogs and CMD training
  • Ensure compliance with Animal Welfare Act relating to dogs
  • Licensing of CMD’s

Vetting

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) level before taking up the post

Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security and in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), applicants who do not hold or acquire Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.

Essential Criteria:

  • Must hold a NPCC Police Dog or equivalent qualification
  • Must hold a full UK driving license with C1, D1 and willing to undertake a Police course/check test to allow them to drive Police vehicles
  • Must hold an Award in Education (AET) or equivalent qualification
  • Confidence working independently with large breed Dogs
  • Confirm physically fit and free from injury that would preclude you from carrying out the described role
  • Able to commute independently to required training sites or closest Public transport Hub for collection
  • Prepared to work overtime during periods of high demand
  • Passed a Kennel Assistant Course or Equivalent
  • Prepared to undergo Continued Professional development (CPD) training in canine husbandry and other relevant qualifications

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and / or Licencing of Activities Involving Animals (England) Regulations 2018
  • Experience using IT systems

Additional Information

Please note: the role is based at Leman Street, London, E1 8EU which will be your main base of work. Additionally, you will be required to attend The Metropolitan Police Dog Training Establishment, Layhams Road, Keston, Kent, BR2 6AR, MPSTC Gravesend Kent and other external training sites. You must be able to travel to any one of these sites or any other training venue. If additional cost is incurred as a result of traveling away from Leman Street, you will be eligible to claim the additional mileage expenses if you use your own vehicle.
