Science and Technology Facilities Council

Salary: £31,931 - £34,709 per annum. A Specialist Allowance of up to £4,000 per annum is also available for this role (dependent on skills and experience).
Hours: Full time
Contract Type: Open Ended.
Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire

Together, our scientist, technologists, engineers and business support team explore the unknown and turn what they find into work that changes the world around us. Whether it’s sending probes into space or finding new ways to treat cancer, everyone here plays a vital role in making a positive difference to society.

Come and discover how much you can achieve when you’re surrounded by world-leading scientists, encouraged to constantly learn and empowered to explore your curiosity.

ISIS produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of instruments. It supports a national and international community of more than 3000 visiting scientists per year who use ISIS for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering and biology. ISIS is the world’s most productive spallation neutron and muon source. This role is within the Control Systems group of the ISIS particle accelerator facility.

About you

You will be responsible for administrating and developing the Linux, Windows and OpenVMS systems used by the ISIS control system to maintain a high level of availability, and for developing and supporting monitoring tools for that purpose.

You will have a role in the ongoing development of control system applications, and their integration with external hardware and software packages. Supporting control system users is another meaningful part of this role, including sharing the duty of providing 24-hour cover for accelerator operations (after sufficient training and experience).

Required experience and skills:

  • Degree in a mathematical, scientific, or computer science field. (S)
  • Experience in Linux systems administration and support. Knowledge of containerised deployments (e.g. Docker Swarm, Kubernetes) and configuration management (e.g. Ansible, Terraform) are required. (S&I)
  • Experience as a developer with modern programming or scripting languages, e.g. Python, C/C++, and/or Java. (S&I)
  • Ability to solve problems individually and collaboratively as part of a team in an Agile software development context. Experience with version control systems (e.g. Git). (I)
  • Willingness to be “on-call” to support ISIS when suitably trained, including participating in an on-call rota. (There are additional allowances while on-call and payments for call-outs). (I)

At least one of the following:

  • Experience of network engineering, security, and administration (S&I)
  • Experience in control systems engineering and integration of hardware with control systems (especially EPICS) (S&I)

Employee Benefits:

We are offering a permanent position with a whole host of benefits including:

  • 30 days holiday (in addition to 10.5 bank holidays and privilege days).
  • Flexible or hybrid working hours.
  • An excellent defined average salary pension scheme.
  • Employee shopping/travel discounts.
  • Excellent learning and development opportunities.

And, alongside Mars landings and black holes, we also explore diverse, international projects in everything from science and engineering to computing and technology. Whether it’s at the cutting edge or behind the scenes, our work is intellectually challenging. It’s very often ground-breaking. And it’s endlessly, irresistibly fascinating.
