We are seeking an Accounting Technician, handling Accounts Payable to join our Office of Finance and Information Technology at the
Oregon Department of Education
. This is a permanent, full-time, SEIU-represented position.
Salary: $3,265.00 - $4,913.00 Monthly before PERS
This is a hybrid role that is required to report to the office when business or operational needs are dependent on on-site activities. Remote work is embraced to the fullest extent possible without interfering with business.

This position is in the Oregon Department of Education, Chief Financial Office (CFO) Accounting Unit of the Office of Finance and Information Technology (OFIT). The Accounting Unit provides the accounting services for the agency, including the School for the Deaf, Early Learning and Youth Development Divisions. The revenue and expenditure streams are complex and include the General Fund, lottery funds, federal funds, and other revenues for dedicated purposes. The Accounting Unit serves all levels of the agency's operations and provides controls for the distribution of funds to local education agencies, individuals, and a number of other state agencies and service providers statewide.
What you will do!

Housed within the Office of Finance and Information Technology - CFO Accounting Unit, the primary purpose of this position is to process payment batches consisting of contract invoices, accounts payable and sub-grant distributions, with a focus on appropriateness, completeness, accuracy, and proper authorization. The complexity of the agency's accounting system requires the incumbent's attention to detail to ensure payments are coded to the correct appropriation and funding stream.

Typical Duties Include:
  • Processing invoices to generate voucher payments of goods and services rendered in Oregon Buys and the statewide accounting system.
  • Auditing vendor and contract invoices for accuracy and completeness.
  • Verify and review coding, payment amounts, index numbers, object codes, and proper authorization for purchasing.
  • Research and report information relating to payments, purchase orders, vouchers or warrants as requested by appropriate staff or vendors and define or make corrections to transactions.
  • Electronically manage files and records in accordance with accounting procedures.
  • Process checks, payments, and other incoming non-ACH receipts processing.
  • Provide customer service to internal and external partners.
  • Provide technical support regarding accounts payable to support business continuation.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure production and efficiency of operations.
  • Identify potential or current problems or inefficiencies in processing and recommend solutions in a collaborative manner.

Minimum Qualifications (Need to have):

Two years of experience calculating, recording, and maintaining accounting information that must include coding transactions and checking them for propriety, balancing, and resolving discrepancies in computer edits; OR
One year of experience calculating, recording, and maintaining accounting information that must include coding transactions and checking them for propriety, balancing, and resolving discrepancies in computer edits AND at least 43 quarter (29 semester) credit hours from an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school that includes 9 quarter (6 semester) credit hours in accounting. Credit hours must include introductory level accounting courses 1 and 2; OR
At least 94 quarter (62 semester) credit hours or an associate degree from an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school that includes 12 quarter (8 semester) credit hours in accounting. Credit hours must include introductory level accounting courses 1 and 2 and may include any additional accounting courses with “accounting” in the title.
Training or experience must include using a computer to enter, update, or retrieve information.
To receive credit for required courses, you may be requested to submit a photocopy of transcripts. Agencies may specify additional qualifications depending on the individual job requirements.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and customer service skills,
  • Experience applying and explaining policies and procedures to a diverse audience with varying levels of accounting and account payable knowledge,
  • Experience in Microsoft Suite, especially Excel with skills and experience using data query tools.
