Job summary

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Events Manager to play a key role contributing to the organisation of the International Competition Network (ICN) Annual Conference.

The CMA is the UK’s world-leading competition authority. Our purpose is to make sure competition works in consumers’ favour, and businesses treat their customers fairly. The CMA will host the ICN Annual Conference in Spring 2025. The ICN comprises over 140 national competition authorities from 129 jurisdictions worldwide and the CMA will play a leading role in organising the agenda, hosting the event and seizing opportunities to strengthen international relationships with other ICN members.

As Events Manager you will ensure the successful delivery of the ICN Annual Conference, which will be held over the course of 3 days, either in Manchester or Edinburgh, with over 600 people expected to attend.

Job description

You will lead a new team, comprised of two Events Coordinators and one Events Officer, and develop conference activities, oversee the development and design of documents that capture and track spend, liaise with external suppliers, and report on progress to senior leaders. You will ensure that a robust project management framework is followed throughout the project, aiming to achieve and improve value for money where possible.

Person specification

Key responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day project management for the planning and delivery of the conference including budget management (ensuring value for money) and internal reporting.
  • Engagement with suppliers and ensuring co-ordination both in advance and on site.
  • Developing the event programme and liaising with speakers and key attendees.
  • Helping to build and lead a high performing, inclusive team through inspiring, strong and visible leadership.
  • Actively liaising with internal and external stakeholders including international organisations, overseas national competition authorities, new and existing external CMA suppliers.
  • Developing and finalising conference activities and programme design for the ICN Annual Conference and instructing your team as appropriate.
  • Line management of two Events Coordinators may also be required.
  • Supporting the delivery of other CMA events or priority projects as appropriate.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.

The selection process will comprise of the sift (CV & application review) and an interview. Arrangements for the interview will be enclosed in the invitation. Interviews will be conducted virtually by Microsoft Teams.

An initial sift based on criteria 1 and 2 (Lead Criteria) may be held if a large number of applications are received. If your application progresses to a full sift, all elements of the essential criteria listed under Person Specification (listed below and in the attached role profile) will then be considered.

Please note that it is essential that your personal statement is aligned to provide evidence that you have the knowledge and experience for each of the following selection criteria (as included on the role profile) in your application:

  • Strong experience of planning and delivery of large-scale events with immovable deadlines (lead criteria).
  • Experience of high-level budget management and financial analysis of events delivery (lead criteria).
  • A self-starter with the flexibility to deliver in a fast-paced project environment, inspiring others to adopt a proactive approach.
  • Excellent people management skills, with experience of leading others through complex and challenging delivery.
  • Demonstrable experience of establishing and managing relationships with a range of stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrable skills and experience in delivering project outcomes, including identifying risks, problem solving, and recommending a preferred course of action.

The sift will take place 23 to 25 May 2023.

Interviews will be held between 5 to 13 June 2023.
