Physics department:

As a department we have a very strong emphasis on collaboration. We work from shared resources, set the same homeworks and use the same assessment materials. As well as a positive effect on workload this also encourages us to discuss different approaches and work as a team when things are busy. We would value the perspective a new member of staff could add to what we do.

We look to intelligently manage workload, using shared assessment methods that work to the benefit of our students whilst using teacher time efficiently. We are lucky to teach able and pleasant students, who are very enthusiastic: we have student-led Physics and Engineering Societies. We are a growing department - our cohort size is set to grow significantly next year - meaning more students will enjoy and benefit from studying A-level Physics and where it can lead subsequently.

We all get on and work well together. We are each lucky enough to have four other experienced, specialist Physics teachers to turn to for advice, and to discuss ideas with.

Key department information:

  • Cohort Size: 214 first years, 156 second years.
  • Number of Staff: 5 physics teachers and 2 technicians
  • Management Structure: Senior Curriculum Manager supported by a Curriculum Manager
  • Exam board specification: AQA A Physics A-level
  • Department facilities:
  • Dedicated Physics Prep Room, where technicians and teachers share the same space, plus four dedicated physics laboratories.
  • Very well equipped department, for example having recently invested in a large number of Bluetooth enabled data loggers.
  • Skilled technicians capable of repairing and making bespoke equipment.

Throughout the year there are a number of whole college events, (open evenings, parent evenings, Interview day, enrollment) at which attendance is required.

Common resources are shared within departments and there are regular opportunities for professional development, delivering extracurricular student clubs and wellbeing / social activities.
