The Role

A vacancy has arisen for a part-time Typist working within the Surrey & Sussex Specialist Crime Command.

Core business hours for the team are 0800-1600 (Mon-Fri).
The specific working pattern for this part time role (18 hours per week) may be subject to negotiation but must include Fridays to ensure adequate office coverage.

At the centre of a major enquiry is the Major Incident Room where all forms of information are collated from many sources. We are looking for an experienced Typist to join our team in the Major Incident Room based at Woking police station.

You will provide an efficient and effective word processing/typing service, including audio typing, document scanning and the ability to take minutes as required in the support of the Major Crime Team (MCT). You will also provide a typing service for the Serious and Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) and Economic Crime Unit (ECU).

Please note: The salary range is £20,572 - £23,506 pro rata.

Key Responsibilities

You will accurately type or electronically import all documents within the Major Incident Room for the benefit of investigative and judicial processes. This includes statements, officer’s reports, questionnaires, messages, interview transcripts and any other document to meet the administrative requirements of the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO).

Skills & Experience

It is essential that you have:

  • Demonstrable experience as a Typist using Microsoft Word. Previous experience of data entry would be an advantage.
  • Keyboard typing skills to the standard of the RSA II (or equivalent) together with a typing speed of at least 60 wpm.
  • The competency to audio type, preferably with previous work experience within the field.
  • The ability to plan and prioritise work and to work calmly and accurately under pressure with the minimum of supervision.
  • The aptitude to assimilate detailed information
  • The capability of absolute discretion in handling matters of a personal, sensitive and confidential nature.
  • Previous experience of working effectively within a team coupled with good interpersonal skills.
• Attention to detail and accuracy, combined with the ability to work to strict time scales. • The willingness to undergo security level vetting.

It is desirable that you should have:
  • A GCSE in English Language (Grade C or above) or equivalent.
  • A mature outlook and the ability to remain detached from the content of the work, some of which will be highly sensitive and could be distressing.

Please Note: You will be required to complete a typing test as part of the interview process.

Surrey Police and Sussex Police work together in collaboration for this role, however they remain two different employers, with differing pay scales, allowances and terms and conditions including hours of employment.
If you are an internal candidate and are conditionally offered the role your attendance record and any reasonable adjustments already in place will be discussed with yourself and your current line manager. If you are successful in your application, you may be required to resign and transfer your employment, taking on the Terms & Conditions and pay scales of the Lead Force (if this is not your existing Home Force).
This post is being advertised in parallel with Force redeployment processes. Any redeployees who are identified will be given preference. This may result in the post being withdrawn at any point during the recruitment process.
Surrey Police and Sussex Police Special Constables, Volunteers and Agency Staff (excluding self employed workers) covered under the Agency Worker Regulations (AWR) are eligible to apply for internal advertised posts.
