The Ventura County Library provides public library service to the cities of Fillmore, Ojai, Port Hueneme, and Ventura as well as the unincorporated areas throughout Ventura County. Ventura County Library is committed to strengthening communities by helping community members to be successful in their educational and work goals, and improving their overall quality of life. The agency mission is: Inspiring our community to explore, discover, and connect. Library facilities are currently located in El Rio, Fillmore, Meiners Oaks, Oak Park, Oak View, Ojai, Piru, Port Hueneme, Saticoy and Ventura (Avenue, Foster, and Hill Road). The Ventura County Library also operates a Mobile Library, Mobile Career Center, and has an Administrative Office located in Ventura.

Under immediate supervision the Library Technician I provides paraprofessional library services in a community library or a support department; may supervise or serve as lead person for pages, clerks and volunteers; and perform related work as required. Library Technician I's may be required to operate an after-school Homework Center.

This position performs a variety of paraprofessional tasks requiring knowledge of library terminology and principles. Work is typically performed within a framework of established procedures under occasional instruction or assistance. Incumbents may be assigned at any community library or special libraries, and in support departments or special programs, such as the Homework Center.

Note: This recruitment is for Extra Help positions meaning that incumbents are employed for temporary work on a day-to-day basis and are not eligible for benefits.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Extra Help vacancies. There are currently five (5) extra help, part-time vacancies with the Ventura County Library in various locations.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:
OPENING DATE: Thursday, July 13, 2023
CLOSING DATE: Continuous and may close at any time; therefore, the schedule for the remainder of the process will depend upon when we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications to meet business needs.
REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS: Applications will be reviewed on a weekly basis beginning the week of July 24, 2023.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Assists and instructs patrons on the use of library resources; charges and discharges library books and materials; prepares patron requests for materials/information that must be obtained from other facilities; and updates library files and records, both automated and manual;
  • Assists the librarian in the coordination and implementation of library programs and activities, including book/material selection and publicity and may supervise the after school Homework Center;
  • Prepares and makes presentations about library programs, services and resources to school classes and other groups of all ages;
  • Assists in liaison work with community groups;
  • May train and assign work of pages and volunteers;
  • Performs duties in support of a Division Manager; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Library Technician I is a non-exempt classification and eligible for overtime compensation.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education or experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). Possession of the required KSAs may typically be demonstrated by:

  • Associate of Arts degree in Library Technology, OR
  • Successful completion of two (2) years of college coursework AND one (1) year of experience involving public contact, OR
  • Successful completion of three (3) years of college coursework, OR
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible clerical experience involving public contact or library services.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
May be required to work evenings, Saturdays and/or Sundays. The ability to bend, stoop, lift, and/or move books (up to 25 lbs); the ability to move around the Library during work shift in order to assist Library patrons, supervise Library Pages, and secure the good order of the building.

DESIRED:
  • Experience working in a public library environment.
  • Experience working with children and teens in a library or educational setting.
  • Proficiency with computers and internet resources.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Some knowledge of:
  • Library agency principles, policies, procedures, terminology and services;
  • Basic reference tools;
  • The Dewey Decimal book classification system and collection arrangements.
Ability to:
  • Bend, stoop, lift, and/or move books up to 25 lbs;
  • Move around the Library during work shift in order to assist Library patrons, supervise pages, and secure the good order of the building;
  • Operate and/or instruct on the use of library equipment (e.g., computer terminals, microfilm/ microfiche projectors, film projectors and cassette players);
  • Organize and disseminate information;
  • Communicate effectively and relate well with people from all age groups;
  • Plan, supervise and evaluate the work of others;
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct library tours and class visits;
  • Interpret and execute written and verbal instructions; and
  • Solve problems and develop methods for implementing solutions.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: A job-related written examination will be conducted to test applicants' knowledge, skills and abilities in relation to shelving, vocabulary, reference, interpersonal relations, and mathematics. Applicants must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Applicants successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
