Job Summary:

Panasonic Energy of North America (PENA) is seeking ambitious Level II Engineer to lead the world’s largest lithium ion battery initiative. With superior battery designs and the fastest manufacturing lines in the world, Panasonic is producing millions of batteries per day at the Gigafactory to support Tesla’s electric vehicle and energy storage businesses. At PENA, engineers quickly become experts in the fundamentals of lithium-ion cell technology and work to integrate that understanding with high speed, automated manufacturing methods to produce the highest performance and highest quality lithium ion batteries.

Essential Duties:

  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and commercial teams to enhance the customer experience and optimize battery designs.
  • Foster and maintain a strong relationship with the customer to facilitate technical discussions.
  • Evaluate design specifications and align them with customer requirements to improve current and future cell designs.
  • Coordinate product change validation and documentation with local and international engineering teams to meet customer expectations.
  • Communicate effectively across various teams in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive and structured test plans and cases for new and existing products.
  • Utilize lean manufacturing and statistical tools to drive root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:

  • To ensure the health and safety in the workplace and for the protection of our employees, wearing PPE is a requirement for some roles at PENA and may include equipment such as a full Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, bump cap, and a full hazmat suit that includes a respirator.

Qualifications: Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Education:

  • Basic: Bachelor's degree in an engineering or scientific discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, Physics, etc.) from a four-year College or university.
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in an engineering or scientific discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, Physics, etc.) from a four-year College or university.

Essential Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of professional or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders from various departments.
  • Hands- on experience in conducting investigations, failure analysis, and working within the production process.
  • Proficiency in test design and setup, data acquisition, and analysis.
  • Practical understanding of experiment design and statistical analysis.
  • Flexibility to work across different environments, including the manufacturing floor, laboratory, and office.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated exceptional ability with a track record of taking full responsibility for projects from start to finish.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and follow up on tasks with minimal direction, prioritizing team success.
  • Capable of managing multiple concurrent tasks in a fast-paced environment, ensuring high-quality results.
  • Strong work ethic and customer service mindset, both internally and externally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience in R&D or manufacturing of battery cells composed of Lithium-ion or other battery chemistry.
  • A background in Lithium-ion cell manufacturing or R&D. Similar experience with other battery chemistries will also be considered.
  • Track record using technical knowledge to aid in resolving customer complaints in a timely manner.
  • Excels at interfacing and working with customers to provide support on customer concerns.
  • Highly proficient in utilizing s laboratory analysis methods and tools to aid in root cause analysis.
  • Extensive data analysis experience such as statistical process control of production data.
  • Experience with supplier quality portals and policies.
  • Familiarity with the Japanese language is desired but not required.
  • Strong data analysis skills with tools such as JMP, Minitab, Python, MATLAB, are highly desired.
