Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

NaTHNaC was set up by the Department of Health in 2002 with the broad aim of Protecting the Health of British Travellers. We seek to improve the quality of travel health advice given by GP practices, travel clinics, pharmacies and other healthcare providers, and provide up-to-date and reliable information for the international traveller, travel industry and national government.

We are commissioned by UK Health Security Agency and hosted by University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH); we also work in partnership with our other network founders Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD). The network partners and Department of Health provide strategic guidance to NaTHNaC through representation on a Technical Advisory Group which meets quarterly.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Service Management

  • Assist with performance reporting from key services – prepare, produce, and distribute complete, accurate and timely reports.
  • Assist with the provision of complex information and analysis to senior internal stakeholders and external organisations to inform performance and research.
  • Communicate analytical/statistical findings to non-analytical professionals.
  • Support and train research visitors on data systems and data analysis.
  • Assist with ensuring data systems are maintained and updated to meet business needs.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures.

Service Development and Quality Improvement

  • Assist in the design, development, and testing of new performance reports.
  • Assist in the design, development, implementation, and quality assurance of new performance reports.
  • Assist in the specification, procurement, implementation, and quality assurance of new data systems.
  • Support the development and maintenance of documentation to ensure high standards, effectiveness, business continuity, replicability, and reproducibility.

Data Quality

  • Assist on data quality assurance on all data systems assessing whether analyses are robust, investigating data anomalies during analyses, liaising with support departments, and implementing corrective action where required.
  • Assist on compliance with information governance standards.
  • Promote a wider understanding of data quality and its implications with stakeholders and staff.

Epidemiological Reviews

  • Undertake epidemiological reviews of travel vaccination recommendations/travel advisories in collaboration with the Epidemiological Strategic Review Group and the Travel and Migrant Health Section at UKHSA. This work involves literature reviews, data sourcing and analysis, mapping, report writing, setting up meetings with internal and external stakeholders to agree on changes to advice, and to organise updates of country information pages on NaTHNaC’s website.
  • Create maps using QGIS and assist the senior information analyst with Python coding and automation tasks.

Outbreak Surveillance

  • Liaise with colleagues at Travel and Migrant Health Section, UKHSA, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) regularly for information and in areas where any specific advice may require coordination.

Website Content Review and Communication

  • Provide content review support with great attention to detail. Work with the Online Communications and Information Officer to assist with formatting on NaTHNaC websites. This will include updating online resources, posting web content, sending electronic communications including bulk email as appropriate and support to maintain the image library.

Knowledge, Training and Experience

  • Understanding of Microsoft Excel, GIS, basic Python.
  • Understanding of the Trust values and objectives
  • Orientation and training of new and junior staff
  • Understanding of Data Protection and Confidentiality requirements
  • Good understanding of data management, analysis and visualisation.
  • Undertake training relevant to the effective performance of the role, including refresher/update training as required.
  • To be aware of and comply with local and national standards e.g. Data Protection
  • Work without direct supervision and take responsibility for ensuring tasks are carried out and completed in a timely manner.
  • Keep up to date with Statutory and Mandatory training.

Person specification

Knowledge & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in specialist area
  • Experience of preparing and presenting reports bringing together complex information from multiple sources with a high level of accuracy
  • Experience of data manipulation and management, analysis, geographic mapping and reporting using a range of data formats and tools
  • Knowledge of QGIS
  • Experience working in an information setting in the NHS or a similar setting

Experience and IT Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience in writing for reports and/or publication
  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment
  • Experience of working with Microsoft Office packages particularly Excel and Access to an advanced level for managing databases and websites
  • Track record of education regarding data manipulation tools and problem solving
  • Project support experience

Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication via telephone, face to face and email
  • Experience of working with colleagues, both clinical and non-clinical, at all levels to scope and develop solutions
  • Excellent attention to detail

Other
