Job summary

The technical team sits within the wider COBR Unit, within NSS and responsible for ensuring among other things the operational readiness of the national crisis management centre. The roles in question require a high degree of autonomy with responsibility for providing all aspects of technical infrastructure, security and systems support to the crisis management apparatus in business as usual and operational activations. The team also works alongside teams from other departments on the delivery of business critical IT, Audio Visual, Voice, Data and Telecommunications projects at a range of security classifications across a number of UK sites.

Job description

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and provide technical support and maintenance for the AV and ICT Systems within the Crisis centre
  • Investigate and resolve faults with Crisis management AV and ICT Systems
  • Ensure that the Crisis Centre Security posture is maintained and all systems are protected from security issues and any security issues are highlighted appropriately
  • Manage and Provide Technical Support to Crisis activations. Deploy for short duration's anywhere within the UK in support of operational requirements and training exercises
  • Lead and support senior managers on technical project delivery (including leading on projects related to technical enhancements of the COBR facilities)
  • Provide specialist technical support to other parts of NSS and wider Cabinet Office

Person specification

Minimum BTEC National or equivalent Level 3 qualification in (electrical, electronic, ICT, Telecommunications or similar engineering discipline)

or

Formal on the job training, preferably through a recognised apprenticeship scheme with a formal qualification in a relevant field(equivalent to a BTEC National), Including Military Technical training.

Proven technical experience of working on ICT, telecommunications or audio-visual systems

IET Professional Registration - Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) as minimum

Technical ability to lead on and investigate/track real time system faults as they occur and ensure they are resolved in a timely manner

Experience of working shift patterns and undertaking effective operational support across shifts e.g. maintaining handovers and system documentation.

Working knowledge of Communications, Technical and Network Security.

Working knowledge of Crisis Centre Audio Video systems, providing in depth technical support.

Maintain project documentation, including writing technical specifications, installation briefs, production of technical drawings and outline work specifications for construction contractors.

Carry out installation, testing and commissioning of new equipment, systems or infrastructure as directed by the Technical Manager

Experience of conducting system acceptance tests with colleagues, contractor teams and end users

Produce and update system drawings and associated documentation, provide input to technical specifications, installation briefs, technical drawings

Ensure Systems Configuration Change Control is maintained by updating Systems and Installation design drawings to capture the current state of modifications to systems installed in the Crisis Management facilities

Produce (if appropriate) and update any System Support Documentation as internal (in house) modifications are carried out on system installations

Carry out Technical Security Inspections of secure areas

Provide Crypto Custodian Support (keymat updates, equipment maintenance and software upgrades)

Maintain specialist skills by a mixture of Continuous Professional Development and formal training courses.
