The General Surgeon will provide direct patient care in both out-patient and in-patient settings, the operating room, the Emergency Department , and will provide on-call staffing needs for the General Surgery department. This surgeon will have assigned OR block time and scheduled clinic times. Administrative duties will be designated by Section Chief of Surgery or Chief of Surgery and will include preventive medicine, emergency preparedness, and completion of all VA required education including BLS and ACLS, to ensure that all activities comply with Joint Commission and Medical Center requirements.
The incumbent should be able to diagnose and treat all of the common general surgical conditions, including malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small and large intestine), gallbladder, endocrine system, skin and soft tissue, upper and lower endoscopy, and advanced laparoscopy is preferred, Robotics. The incumbent is responsible for seeing patients in consultation in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The incumbent provides care of the Veterans' medical needs by performing examination, surgical consultation, and developing treatment and follow-up plans. The incumbent will provide ongoing patient and family education throughout the course of treatment. The incumbent must adhere to policies and procedures regarding the completion of all required orders, operation/procedure notes/reports, discharge summaries, progress notes, clinical reminders, all other required medical documentation, and performance measures in a timely fashion.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM (subject to change based on facility needs). The incumbent will be expected to participate in call schedule after hours and at least one weekend a month, and will need to possess the ability to respond promptly in emergent situations.
