Job Description

Are you interested in developing a career in research in the field of ‘Data Analytics’ in a world leading research environment? We are looking for experienced researchers to join NPL’s Data Science department. You will be given the opportunity to grow your expertise allowing you to develop solutions to advance our research. When commercial opportunities arise, your work will be directly supporting UK Industry, creating new products and services to solve real world challenges. To be successful in the role you will enjoy working within a multi-disciplinary research team. You will develop new knowledge and skills as you find solutions to National Challenges. The knowledge you gain will then be shared with colleagues, collaborators and the scientific community. You will be expected to act as an ambassador for the Data Science Department to build new collaborations across NPL, academia and industry, nationally and internationally.

We are looking for experienced researchers in the field of Data Analytics, covering digital health, biomedical signal processing, image analysis, uncertainty quantification and machine learning. You will be working in a diverse and growing team on a range of Data Analytics projects, mainly to address specific challenges within the Digital Health sector but will also at times work on projects across different science and industry domains. Typically, you will have to work on several projects and the ability to manage your time is essential.

Some examples of projects you may be involved in include:

  • Signal processing involving photoplethysmography and other physiological signals, such as ECG and data from wearables.
  • Uncertainty quantification for machine learning
  • Simulation, image and data analysis and uncertainty propagation
  • Digital infrastructure for medical and clinically relevant research, including hosting, storage, curation and harmonisation of data
  • Assessing image-based AI tools for detecting disease and interpretability of model outputs
About the Data Science Department

NPL’s Data Science Department is a growing and diverse team of around 45 staff with roughly 18 PhD students. We are based across three geographical locations nationally: Teddington, Cambridge, and Glasgow.

The department works to address scientific challenges within application areas in Life Sciences & Health, Advanced Manufacturing, Energy & Environment, and the Digitalization of Metrology. To deliver this range of application areas we work alongside world leading scientists in every department within NPL and with NPL partners in academia and industry.

We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. We strive to offer a great work life balance - if you are looking for full time, part time or flexible options, we will try to make this work where business possible. This will be dependent on the kind of role you do and part of the business you work in


What you can bring to the role:
  • Scientific/Engineering problem-solving skills.
  • Degree in Mathematics, computer science or a science/engineering discipline.
  • PhD in Mathematics, computer science or a science/engineering discipline or equivalent research experience in academia or industry.
  • Proficiency in at least one data analytics language such as Python, MATLAB, Java, C++, R,etc.
  • Ability to manage your own workload.
  • Working in a cross-disciplinary environment.
  • Experience and a working knowledge of machine learning methods would be desirable for certain projects
