ATTENTION ALL ALASKA RESIDENTS!

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Design and Engineering Services is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1 / 2 to help us
Keep Alaska Moving!


What you will be doing:

This position serves as an assistant designer on rural surface transportation construction projects, primarily responsible for completing bid-ready plans, specifications, and cost estimates for rural road and airport construction projects under the direct supervision of an experienced designer. You would coordinate project development with interdepartmental groups, regulatory agencies, local governments and project stakeholders, and the general public. You would also assist with preparing and managing consultant contracts.

The working environment you can expect:

The position is in the McKinley building located off Peger Road and Picket Place. You would spend the majority of your time in an office cubicle but will frequently travel to remote communities off of the highway system, typically for one to three days at a time.

Who we are looking for:
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of:

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple and competing projects and deadlines
  • Able to take responsibility and ownership for a problem, project, or issue.
  • A demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Suite, experience with AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS, and other software common to the profession
  • Experience in construction or design related to civil engineering.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Minimum Qualifications

Engineering Assistant 1

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:
An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.

Engineering Assistant 2

Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant 1 or 2 level depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. Please respond to all the minimum qualification questions. If filled at a lower level, incumbent will have the opportunity to advance to the next level upon management's assessment that the incumbent is performing adequately and has successfully completed the training plan and meets the minimum qualifications of the higher level.
