ROLE SUMMARY
What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
Lead interactions with stakeholders, developing analytical solutions to deliver timely and robust data to enable technical decision-making, keeping stakeholders informed of progress thorough formal and informal communication. Review technical resources and capability, propose novel analytical technologies and approaches as part of an internal project team. Design and undertake analytical studies, in support of projects, that are delivered and reported in compliance with agreed technical and quality standards. This requires expertise in a vast range of analytical chemistry principles and techniques, quality management, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication. Lead and support the interpretation of results in respect of internal and external reporting and project decision making. Understand the value of analytical data to the business and the context of its use.

ACCOUNTABILITIES
Provides analytical science leadership in scoping and technical discussions with project team members, giving appropriate scientific guidance and evaluating technical requirements.-
Provides analytical science leadership in designing, developing and validating fit for purpose test methods and quality control standards.

Apply technical knowledge as part of R&D project team in support of internal and external reporting and project decision making.

Interpret stakeholder requirements, make technical recommendations, and evaluate implementation.

Evaluate and recommend opportunities to apply novel analytical technologies to R&D challenges and future capability builds for improvement.

Provide appropriate support to project teams and external peers on analytical data to ensure delivery of scientific output of appropriate integrity.

Write technical plans, reports, presentations, and publications.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE
ESSENTIAL
Experience Required
Thorough knowledge and hands-on application of best technical practice, analytical method development and validation for measurement of chemical constituents of food, environmental, tobacco and/or consumer products.-
Hands-on expertise in the operation, troubleshooting, method development and validation of complex analytical instrumentation including GC-MS, LC-MS and LC-MS/MS with associated high-level problem-solving skills.

Skilled use and understanding of preparative and instrumental techniques applicable to the isolation and measurement of trace-level compounds in complex matrices.

Evidence of current technical scientific awareness, and knowledge of relevant aspects of emerging analytical science technologies.

Excellent planning skills and ability to work in a team environment and independently.

Proficient in writing technical reports, presentations, and publications.
Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required

Evidence of appropriate leadership, coaching, development and technical governance to ensure that all scientific output is consistently of the required integrity.

Ability to influence and communicate across the team and within R&D.

Understanding of the value of analytical data to the business and the context of its use.

Experience of working in a GLP compliant and/or ISO accredited laboratory.
Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

Professional or academic achievement in Chemistry (or a related physical science) equivalent to first degree level or above (MSc / MPhil / PhD), with additional relevant industry or academic experience.

Active membership of the RSC or evidence of proactive continuing professional development.
BENEFICIAL

Experience in accurate mass spectrometry and/or development of non-targeted data processing programs.

Proficient, use or interest in a computer programming language (e.g. python) for the automation of data processing.

Awareness or knowledge of the physiochemical processes of gas-particle formation, and/or prior experience of working in a product development environment.
