Job Description

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

LSHTM is recruiting up to three motivated, enthusiastic individuals to join the Management Trainee Scheme.

During this 18-month programme, trainees will spend 3-6 months in a Professional Service team (e.g. IT, Communications, HR) and at least 3 months with a faculty. Placements are allocated to meet strategic needs and are flexible to meet changing priorities. Management Trainees’ development needs are discussed throughout, and relevant training is identified to further develop Trainees’ skills. It is envisaged the Trainees will acquire the skills, knowledge and experience to assume substantive roles at LSHTM (subject to a recruitment process) and become potential managers of the future.

Effective leadership and management are key to delivering excellent professional services. The scheme is designed to provide an insight into how a world-leading research and education institute runs, offering direct experience working with senior staff while managing a portfolio of projects.

The scheme presents an exciting opportunity to develop and apply theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills within a practical and complex work environment.

The post-holder will have a qualification at further or higher education level, or equivalent experience. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt oral and written communication methods and styles to suit the audience is essential. The post-holder will have the ability to work proactively and use initiative, demonstrating effective and creative problem-solving skills. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed-term for 18 months.

The salary will be on the Professional Services salary scale Grade 4 in the range £32,303-£36,567 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro-rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London.

Applications should be made on-line via our website at http://jobs.lshtm.ac.uk. Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk.

The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as "Please see attached CV" will not be considered acceptable.
