The Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology (HDQM) in the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking applications for two full-time, tenure-track faculty positions in the Human Development program at the assistant professor level to start August 2024.
The Human Development (HD) program offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees. The graduate program includes two specialization areas, Developmental Science and Educational Psychology. The undergraduate Early Childhood & Early Childhood Special Education (EC/ECSE) is a cross-departmental teacher education program for students who are interested in teaching young children with and without disabilities. The Human Development undergraduate program explores the biological, psychological, sociological, and cultural characteristics of learning and development across the lifespan through small class environments and internship experiences.
Both faculty positions will involve research, teaching, mentorship, and collaboration in the Human Development Graduate program. One position will be aligned with our Human Development Undergraduate Major, and the second position will be aligned with the Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education (EC/ECSE) program.
We welcome applicants who conduct research in any area of human development. We are especially interested in scholars whose research includes one or both important areas of study, namely, research that is:
- Centered on the development of infants, children, or families from historically excluded groups (e.g., racial and ethnic groups, immigrants), or in understudied contexts (e.g., rural settings, under-resourced communities), and/or at the intersection of human development and education.
- Focused on or has the potential to be translational and/or lead to the development of intervention studies
For the position that will be associated with the EC/ECSE program, experience in and/or knowledge of early childhood classrooms/education in the public school setting is especially valued.
The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) launch and maintain an active research program; (2) apply for external grants and contracts to support the applicant’s research; (3) teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels; (4) mentor master’s and doctoral students; and (5) provide service to the profession at the state, national, and international levels.
The HDQM department is committed to increasing diversity within our campus community. Candidates with a demonstrated ability to incorporate diverse perspectives into teaching and scholarship as well as a commitment to working with students and groups from underrepresented backgrounds are preferred.
In addition to the HD program, the Department of HDQM includes an exceptionally strong program in quantitative methodology from which doctoral students receive training in statistics, psychometrics, and research methodology. The department is also home to the laboratory school Center for Young Children (CYC) and Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention (CECEI).
