The technological rate of change poses distinct challenges for governance. The is a cross-disciplinary, national research centre, which aims to aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for responsible, ethical, and inclusive automated decision-making. The Fellow will also be responsible for policy-oriented research and research engagement with policymakers and a wide range of other stakeholders, drawing on interdisciplinary research from across the Centre. In relation to GenAISim, the Fellow will have the opportunity to analyse how developing synthetic data and generative and data-driven simulations may be used in policymaking. This could include, for example, considering the evidential and process-based questions arising from the use of synthetic data and simulations. In addition to colleagues at Sydney, the Fellow will collaborate actively with the ADM+S Centre’s national and international network of participants including at the , , , , and . Worldwide, governments are taking concrete steps to adapt existing laws to technological, social and other changes brought about by expanding uses of AI, and to develop new, risk-based regulatory frameworks. At the same time others are moving to provide more governance for AI: for example via the development of technical standards and other frameworks. The Regulatory Project will contribute to this process, examining fundamental questions that these technologies pose for our regulatory techniques, and engaging research and researchers from across the Centre and the Centre’s partners to inform and respond to regulatory initiatives and quandaries.GenAISim: Simulation in the Loop for Multi-Stakeholder Interactions with Generative AgentsTraditional decision-making processes often struggle to adapt to the dynamic and multifaceted nature of the modern world. This research addresses a higher-level profound need for advanced automated decision-making tools that can address complex, context-rich challenges in society. This project will investigate a hybrid decision-making system, leveraging cooperative knowledge from multiple stakeholders through socio-technical observations, and knowledge priors in Large Language Models (LLMs) and open datasets. It will develop GenAISim, a novel suite of generative and data driven simulations, useful for depicting current and future urban scenarios, including in mobility, urban policymaking, and health domains. Through a multidisciplinary sociotechnical framework of investigation, this project will establish a new simulation in the loop paradigm.Your key responsibilities will be to:conducting high-quality research relevant to the projects outlined above, both independently and collaboratively under the direction of ADM+S Centre investigatorspreparing and publishing research outcomes in relevant high-quality refereed journals, reports, books, and/or online publications.presenting research outcomes at seminars, conferences, and industry meetings, and engaging with external stakeholderscontributing to public understanding and debate through media, industry and/or policy engagementcontributing actively to the ADM+S Centre and University of Sydney Law School’s research culture, including participation in research collaboration and community-building within the ADM+S Centre, including participation in joint research projects under the auspices of the ADM+S Centre as directed by the Centre Investigators.responsibility for project administration and organisation including coordination across Investigators, conference and workshop organisation as directed by the Centre Investigatorsconforming to University and ADM+S Centre requirements with respect to research ethics and integrity and data managementcompliance with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practicesTo find out more about ADM+S and our research, clickAbout youcompletion or near-completion of a PhD in Law, or completion of an undergraduate degree in law (LLB or equivalent) and a PhD in another field relevant to the project such as Data Science, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Anthropology, Political Science, or Public Policy / Administrationdemonstrated scholarly interest and ability in issues of law and regulation related to the projects outlined abovestrong evidence of outstanding analytic ability and academic writing skills, including the capacity to produce high quality peer-reviewed academic publications, demonstrated by scholarly publications commensurate with opportunitya commitment to interdisciplinary research in relation to automated decision-making law and regulation;experience or demonstrated interest in contributing to relevant policy debates and communication with government, community and industry stakeholdersability and willingness to work independently to generate distinctive contributions to scholarly knowledge in relation to the projects outlined aboveability and willingness to work collaboratively with other researchers on joint projects and publications in the projects outlined above. You will be appointed at either a Level A or B, depending on your qualifications and experience.About the University of Sydney Law SchoolThe University of Sydney Law School is one of the world’s leading law schools, ranked 16th in the QS World Universities Rankings for the discipline of law (2023).
