The ADM+S Centre brings together leading researchers in the humanities, law, social and technological sciences in an international research, industry, and civil society network.An exciting opportunity has arisen for the for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Fellow located at the University of Sydney node of the The Fellow will contribute primarily to the Centre’s flagship interdisciplinary projects: primarily There will also be opportunities to contribute to debates around synthetic data and simulated agents for multistakeholder policymaking via a second flagship project,In the Regulatory Project, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Fellow will be responsible for conducting research and analysing in-depth the deployment of ADM systems (including AI and generative AI), by public and private sector actors and across supply chains; how that deployment challenges existing regulatory, legal and inter-and intra-institutional frameworks, including whether, and how these will need to shift to accommodate a risk-based and ex ante (pre-deployment or pre-market) approach to addressing potential harms. The Fellow will also be responsible for policy-oriented research and research engagement with policymakers and a wide range of other stakeholders, drawing on interdisciplinary research from across the Centre. In relation to GenAISim, the Fellow will have the opportunity to analyse how developing synthetic data and generative and data-driven simulations may be used in policymaking. This could include, for example, considering the evidential and process-based questions arising from the use of synthetic data and simulations.In addition to colleagues at Sydney, the Fellow will collaborate actively with the ADM+S Centre’s national and international network of participants including at the , , , , and . The Fellow will also have access to the ADM+S Centre’s extensive research training and professional development opportunities, international visiting fellowships, and exchanges (travel arrangements permitting), and the ADM+S Centre’s network of industry partners, including the Gradient Institute.About the projectsThe Regulatory ProjectADM systems (including AI, foundation models and generative AI) pose ongoing regulatory challenges for Australian governments at every level, and across multiple domains. 2024-2027 is a critical period for the development of regulation of AI. Worldwide, governments are taking concrete steps to adapt existing laws to technological, social and other changes brought about by expanding uses of AI, and to develop new, risk-based regulatory frameworks. At the same time others are moving to provide more governance for AI: for example via the development of technical standards and other frameworks. The Regulatory Project will contribute to this process, examining fundamental questions that these technologies pose for our regulatory techniques, and engaging research and researchers from across the Centre and the Centre’s partners to inform and respond to regulatory initiatives and quandaries.GenAISim: Simulation in the Loop for Multi-Stakeholder Interactions with Generative AgentsTraditional decision-making processes often struggle to adapt to the dynamic and multifaceted nature of the modern world. This research addresses a higher-level profound need for advanced automated decision-making tools that can address complex, context-rich challenges in society. This project will investigate a hybrid decision-making system, leveraging cooperative knowledge from multiple stakeholders through socio-technical observations, and knowledge priors in Large Language Models (LLMs) and open datasets. It will develop GenAISim, a novel suite of generative and data driven simulations, useful for depicting current and future urban scenarios, including in mobility, urban policymaking, and health domains.
