Job Description

Are you looking for a new role where you can earn while you learn? Do you enjoy science and learning new skills? Or do you already work in pharmacy and want a new challenge? We are seeking 2 self-motivated individuals to join us for the September cohort.

The L3 course is a 24-month development programme to become a Pharmacy Technician through work based learning and by attending regular training sessions. Supervision and support will be provided during all tasks, enabling the apprentice to work within the organisation to gain experience,
confidence and to deliver effective and safe patient focused support, to the designated team.

Successfully completing the training programme will lead to a Level 3 Pharmacy Technician (integrated) apprenticeship.

The Pharmacy team at the North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust have an exciting opportunity to train to become a Pharmacy Technician. You will be joining a friendly, inclusive and supportive team in a forward thinking department; committed to delivering high quality patient care.

The successful candidate will undertake a Level 3 Pharmacy Technician (integrated) apprenticeship and will be delivered via virtual/ e-learning. This qualification will enable you to register as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) at the end of your training placement. This post will be at a band 4 - Annex 21 apprenticeship salary.

You will rotate through each area of pharmacy, including in-patient services, procurement, stores and the wards (medicines management). Full training will be given in each rotation and you will be supported by a Practice Supervisor and an Educational Supervisor over the 2 year period.

You must have a minimum of 4 GCSE’s (grade C or above) including Maths, English and Science and possess a Level 2 in Pharmacy Services (or equivalent) or currently be working towards completion. You must also be highly organised and motivated, possess good communication skills and capable of meeting multiple deadlines.

The Pharmacy Service comprises of Inpatient and Outpatient dispensary services, ward based clinical pharmacy services, Medicines Information, aseptic and non-sterile production services, pharmacy stores & distribution, procurement and homecare services. We cover a range of clinical specialties including HIV, general medicine, emergency services, surgery, rheumatology, anti-coagulation, oncology & haematology, women’s health, paediatrics and infection control.

DISPENSARY/DISTRIBUTION SERVICES
1 To assist with the ordering, receipt and issue of stock items to wards and departments using the pharmacy computer system.
2 To assist in the assembly of stock for wards and departments, including intravenous fluids when required.
3 To assist in ensuring work is prioritised effectively within the department.
4 To assist with the top-up service as directed by the Lead Technician (after appropriate training.)
5 To assist with the return to stock and /or disposal of returned items following departmental procedures.
6 To assist in quality control checks as directed by the QC manager.
7 To assist in the ordering and receipt of non-medical pharmacy items.
8 To complete other tasks within distribution as directed by the Lead Technician
9 To assist in the dispensing of in-patient/outpatient prescriptions under the supervision of a pharmacist/accredited checking pharmacy technician (after appropriate training).
10 To complete other tasks within the dispensary as directed by the dispensary manager.
11 To undertake occasional light deliveries to wards and departments.
12 To answer the departmental telephones (when appropriate) in a prompt and courteous manner. To direct enquiries to suitable departments or individuals.
13 To answer general enquiries from ward staff or direct the enquiry to the appropriate person.
14 To be aware of and put into practice, the principles of good stock control at all times including stock rotation and routine checking of expiry dates.
15 To assist in reception duties including taking in prescriptions, collection of fees and entry of prescription details onto computer system.
16 Maintain high standards of cleanliness and tidiness in working areas at all times.
17 To counsel patients under the supervision of a pharmacist/senior Pharmacy Technician (after appropriate training period).

PROCUREMENT
1 To receive Pharmaceutical goods against the orders placed for all locations. (Dispensary, Distribution store, Production Sterile and Non Sterile
2 To unpack boxes or containers and match the items carefully with order sheet. To pay careful attention and check the correct strength, pack size and expiry date.
3 To follow storage and handling conditions for each medicine received. (Fridge line, inflammable and toxic and hazardous materials etc.)
4 To input data in to computer system for all the deliveries received.
5 To file order sheets in numerical order into the folder as per the location
6 To send delivery notes, credit notes and Invoices for payment to the Invoice Manager
7 To assist in putting away of goods in correct shelf location and ensuring rotation of stock
8 To ensure that all wrongly delivered goods are packed safely and returned as per Departmental standard operating procedures
9 To assist Senior Pharmacy Technician to place the orders by phone and fax
10 To print order recommendations and orders from computer under the supervision of Senior Pharmacy Technician
11 To liaise with suppliers by telephone with queries regarding delivery of urgent medicines, non-delivery of medicines and to chase uncompleted orders.
12 To receive and check the unlicensed and special drugs and send to Quality Control for inspection
13 To carry out the physical stock count of I.V. Fluids
14 To check the expiry date and rotation of stock and to distribution of I.V Fluid boxes when required

MEDICINES MANAGEMENT
1 To support the Pharmacy Technician Specialist (Medicines Management) in managing an efficient,
accurate and flexible near patient service to the hospital wards.
2 Assists the Ward Pharmacists in providing a comprehensive Patient counselling service to in-patients, particularly regarding their discharge medication
3 To conduct medicines reconciliation and patient own drug assessment under the supervision of appropriate members of staff
4 To manage the transfer or return of medicines, following patient transfer or discharge, by liaising with ward staff and/or by checking Real Time on the Trust computer system.
5 To provide information to nursing and medical staff on aspects of drug availability, as appropriate

GENERAL
1 To participate in the Pharmacy Late Duty service, weekend service, and Bank Holiday service as per rota.
2 To maintain satisfactory personal performance and professional standards and to achieve, where
possible, agreed objectives described in the Annual Staff Appraisal system undertaken by the line manager/Co-ordinator.
3 To uphold the principles of Clinical Governance within the Trust
4 To participate in relevant education and training and CPD activities as appropriate to ensure professional development and the concept of lifelong learning.
5 To be aware of and apply relevant legislation such as Health and Safety at Work Act, COSSH, Medicines Act, GMP etc.
6 To uphold and comply with the Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions of North Middlesex University Hospital.
7 Nothing omitted or written here shall absolve the post holder from at all times ensuring that correct, professional techniques, ethics, attitudes and procedures are maintained by his or herself or the staff for whom he/she is responsible.
8 To undertake any other relevant duties, as may be required by the Head of Pharmacy.

2 Respond to enquiries in a friendly, professional and courteous manner, resolving issues where possible or escalating to an appropriate team member when required.
3 Communicate effectively and use appropriate interpersonal skills with people both internally and externally, maintaining the professional reputation of the Trust and department at all times.
4 Portraying a professional image, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
5 To continuously contribute to the progression and development of the chosen department through the provision of a high quality service.
6 The post holder will be expected to complete all mandatory training provided

RELATION TO PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTITUDES
1 In each of the rota, to agree learning and performance objectives, assess progress with and prove competence to the Senior Technician.
2 To develop the required knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to obtain Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technician, registration and gain employment as a Pharmacy Technician. (This may require working additional hours occasionally and some study
will be required outside of working hours e.g. completion of college assignments, and attendance at Local training sessions).
3 Attend off-the-job training day once day a week with non-attendance only in exceptional circumstances.
4 Meet deadlines for college assignments and assessments
5 Comply with college and workplace conditions of learning

1 To learn and practice good team work, good communication skills and customer care.
2 To make a full contribution to the work of each section. It is particularly important to learn to contribute without having to be asked and to take pride in the overall performance of the team.

5 Discuss any learning difficulties with Co-ordinator/ Line Manager as soon as they arise
