General SummaryThe Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, it is the largest professional society for foresters and other forest management professionals and academics in the world. More information about SAF is available atThe Director of Professional Development is responsible for working with constituent groups to identify, prioritize, and implement professional development programs, oversee the Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credit program, lead ForestEd (Learning Management System) efforts and provide oversight for the Job Corps pilot. The Director develops, with support from communications, packages and delivers products to forestry and natural resource professionals. Oversees and coordinates the professional development program and assesses its efficacy on a continuous basis. The position serves as a resource to the Forestry community by developing training that supports skill building and the attainment and maintenance of credentials. They will conduct ongoing needs assessments; and evaluate the success of SAF’s professional development endeavors.The position reports to the CEO and will be required to prioritize multiples projects and initiatives and maintain currency in the field. This individual supervises two employees and works with internal employees and outside vendors to translate information into programs that that can be successfully delivered and drive revenue to the Society.Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):General:Manages the budget for SAF’s professional development effortsProvide strategic direction for professional growth and engagement with SAFSupervises staff of this director areaEnsures timely performance feedback occurs and annual reviews take placeEngages as a member of SAF’s leadership teamProfessional Development:Formulates and recommends programs, goals and objectives for education programs.Plans, develops, manages and evaluates special-topic education programs.Ensures quality control of consistency that required components of education programs meet the accreditation standards or other compliance requirements.Ensures quality control of compliance in documentation for all certified activities.Manages and evaluates vendors and consultants as they relate to continuing education services.Acts as a liaison to other departments regarding continuing education requirements and inquiries.Conducts onsite review of education programs and industry-supported meetings.Provide strategic leadership, budget oversight, and serve as implementation point of contact for Forest Service Job Corps conservation education pilotContinuing Forestry Education (CFE):Identify and work with stakeholders to develop learning opportunities and build relationships with groups that utilize SAF’s CFE systemOversee the online Learning Management System (LMS)Develop relationships and agreements for content to generate revenueEstablish and streamline standard operating procedures for an improved administrative and user experienceMaintain the CFE Handbook including monitoring and administration of guidelines;Manage Course development by, Working with existing vendors’, Identify additional vendors, and Working with volunteersVolunteer Management:Serves as staff liaison to the Forest Science and Technology BoardServes as staff POC for Communities of InterestOther:Performs other duties as assigned by CEOJob Specifications:Knowledge of curriculum development and demonstrated advanced knowledge of continuing education essentials and standardsProficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPointExperience with databasesExcellent communication skillsPrior association or nonprofit experience (Highly desired)Personable and nimble with a desire and ability to contribute to the continued success of our organization.Excellent written and oral communication skillsStrong attention to detail, highly organized with excellent multi-tasking skillsRemains current on nonprofit best practices, including state and federal lawSelf-starter with a demonstrated ability to take initiative and accomplish tasks on time and with minimum supervisionExcellent customer service ethic; adept at developing and maintaining collaborative internal and external relationships; respects differing perspectivesDetail-oriented and able to produce organized and accurate materials quicklyProficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPointAbility to travel 20% - 30% to events and conferencesQualifications and Education Requirements5+ years of overall professional experience: ideally years of curriculum design and adult educationBachelor’s degree in forestry, instructional design, or similar, or comparable experience in leading education effortsExperience with a Content Management System (iMIS preferred)Preferred Education/SkillsGraduate degree a plusExperience with iMIS content management system a plusKnowledge and passion for forests and natural resources a plusLocationThis is a remote position with occasional travel.SalarySalary range for this position is $75,000 to $80,000 AnnuallyBenefitsThe Society of American Foresters takes pride in offering comprehensive and affordable benefits for our employees and their families.
