This role involves making fiscally responsible decisions and recommendations that support and align with the DC strategic plan, mission and values.The position provides operational oversight of the Student Development (SD) Office, coordinating in-person and online transition, orientation programming across two campuses with three intakes per academic year. The manager designs, implements and evaluates programs to support students throughout their time at DC from first-year to graduation.The manager oversees the student leadership programming, fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment with innovative programming and supportive resources. They aim to create programming that engage students, enhance their skills, increase confidence, preparing them for successful careers and meaningful community involvement.The manager serves as the chair of the Student Conduct Committee guiding deliberations and ensuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures. As chair, the incumbent facilitates regular meetings, hearings, and training sessions for committee members. They ensure that matters addressed through formal resolution processes are conducted with fairness, transparency, and consistency.The manager provides leadership and guidance to both employees, and student staff and volunteers, including developing and facilitating training, providing mentorship and coaching during both challenging and successful times. The manager champions collaboration with internal and external partners to enhance the student experience.Transition, Orientation, and Student Leadership ProgramingEnsures programming enhances the student experience and fosters a sense of belonging and community that aligns with the DC strategic plan, mission and vision.Oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of student development programming and initiatives; including identifying timelines and milestones.Establishes and implements student-centric processes and ensures excellence in the delivery of services to students.Collaborates with internal and external partners to coordinate efforts in developing college-wide programming that is responsive to and supports the needs of a diverse student population, complements the academic process, and contributes to a vibrant campus community. This includes liaising and communicating with student governments, campus partners and the larger DC community about programming and services.Administration, staff recruitment, training and supervisionOversees the day-to-day operations of the SD Office; including overseeing staff and student leaders.Accountable for effective recruitment, selection, supervision, performance planning, onboarding, evaluation, training, and development of employees in accordance with DC’s recruitment, job evaluation, and performance management processes.Oversees staff attendance and provides leadership and supervision by determining work priorities/assignments and approving staff scheduling.Ensures that employee assignments are consistent and in compliance with college policies and procedures, collective and local agreements.Meets with staff to continually evaluate services offered and recommend or direct changes as required.Works with team to set departmental goals and plans that align with college-wide initiatives and objectives.Engage employees in the pursuit of high individual and team performance by providing appropriate recognition, effective conflict resolution, formative feedback, and addressing performance issues in an effective and timely manner.Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with campus partners to ensure a collaborative and coordinated approach to programming and communications.Utilizes the Collective Agreement, college policies (i.e. Student Conduct and Purchasing), relevant provincial legislation (i.e. Occupational Health and Safety Act) processes and forms as necessary.Acts as a role model for collaborative decision-making as well as supportive and cooperative working relationships.Facilitates team building and planning sessions.Builds understanding of the SD office and its contribution to the DC community; including but not limited to updating promotional and informational publications and representing office.Advises and serves on relevant internal committees and working groups as appropriate.Establishes a framework for developing, implementing, and communicating a student life strategy at DC to instil a sense of school spirit while providing the information and strategies necessary for student success at college.Provides oversight of several key events in support of students transition and development, including—but not limited to—PREP 1000, a first-year experience course, Start Strong, Academic Welcome Week, Orientation, Institute of Student Leadership, DC Crew and student engagement initiatives.Designs and develops programming guided by student development theory and promotes student learning, development and engagement.Creates an environment that promotes continuous improvement and excellence in delivering services and programming for students.Articulates vision and plans.Assesses potential risks and takes action to mitigate them when planning eventsConducts needs assessment and analysis to identify gaps and areas for program development.Budget Planning and MonitoringEnsures department budget is used effectively by planning, monitoring, and updating to meet the department's ongoing needs.Responsible for effectively tracking expenses and income and making in-year adjustments to ensure spending is on target and fiscally responsible.Plans and refines budget strategies to meet the department's ongoing needs.Chair the Student Conduct CommitteeChair the Student Conduct Committee and ensure Student Conduct hearings adhere to institutional policies and procedures and that matters addressed through formal resolution process are conducted with fairness, transparency, and consistency.Act as single adjudicator as required.Coordinate student communications and facilitation of administrative duties associated with leading a student conduct hearing, including administration of sanctions.Facilitates regular meetings, hearings, and training sessions for committee members; including developing and updating training materials.QUALIFICATIONS:A minimum of a 4-year diploma/degree in Education, Leadership, Sociology, Psychology, Human Resources (relevant field) required.Master’s degree preferred.Adjudication for Tribunals and Boards certification or equivalentExtensive knowledge of student development theory and trends and challenges in higher educationSolid understanding of the student experience and barriers students are facingAbility to facilitate training that supports student developmentKnowledge of Learning Management SystemsKnowledge of AODA and UDL principlesMental Health First Aid/ ASSIST Training/SafeTalkFive to eight years demonstrated experience working in student affairs, student development, and education or related field, with knowledge of and established relationships with institutions and groups active in student affairs and services.Progressive leadership experience in student affairs and higher education with knowledge and experience in student conduct.Solid understanding of student development theory, student issues and needs of students.Program development experience focused on meeting the needs of students with their transition into, through and out of post-secondary.Experience designing and implementing student orientation, transitions and leadership development programming.Demonstrated skills in leading, developing, supporting and coaching staff with a good understanding of labour relations and managing in a unionized environment.Strong team building, human resource management, performance management, coaching and motivation skills.Strong and effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to reconcile significantly diverse viewpoints, foster cooperation and work collaboratively within and across various departments.Complex problem-solving skills and ability to handle multiple competing priorities.Experience in handling student judicial and disciplinary processes and fact-finding.Experience with strategic planning, budget, program development, and evaluation processes.Practical and theoretical experience in social justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, specifically working with students in equity-deserving groups including but not limited to students who are racialized, 2SLGBTQQIA+, with disabilities, or Indigenous.Strong project and team management skills and abilities.Required SkillsBand 10: $85,529 - $106,911 annuallyRequired ExperiencePlease apply below by submitting your cover letter and resume to the online portal.
