Job Description

The Alfred University Assistant Baseball Coach is responsible for assisting the head baseball coach with the organization and management of the NCAA Division III baseball program. This includes teaching and coaching student-athletes for successful competition; mentoring and engaging student-athletes’ for athletic, academic, and personal success; meeting recruiting goals; civic engagement; assisting in the planning and managing of budgets and schedules; logistics of team travel, fundraising; and developing positive alumni and parent relations.The Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for assisting the head strength & conditioning coach with the organization and management of an athletic department-wide strength and conditioning program. This includes the design and implementation of year-round sport-specific training programs for Alfred University intercollegiate 28 athletic teams comprised of approximately 600 student-athletes. The Assistant will have certain team assignments. The Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach will effectively train groups of student-athletes on techniques to improve functional strength, fitness, speed, agility, and flexibility. The coach must be able to motivate athletes and instill competitiveness while functioning in a team environment. The Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach will collaborate with sport coaches and athletic trainers to ensure that student-athlete strength and conditioning training programs meet the goals of the team and individual.The responsibilities of this position are assigned as follows: Assistant Baseball Coach (50%) and Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach (50%).Salary: $49,464.80, 10-month position, 35 hours per weekEssential Functions:Teaching & Coaching:Maintain an exemplary standard of conduct, which reflects the highest level of professionalism and good judgmentProvide a teaching and learning environment that is nurturing, intellectual and supportive of individual differencesAssist in the development of strategies and techniques for all phases of the sport of baseball to best prepare the team and individuals for competitionAssist in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of practice and competition plans that are effective for the sport and congruent with team and individual abilityAssist in the development and implementation of a team philosophy that is supportive of the educational mission of the university and the athletic departmentReinforce appropriate conduct to students and staff that brings credit to the team and Alfred UniversityDesign and implement sport-specific strength training programs for teams while using technology to assist with tracking of workoutsEmphasize programming on injury prevention and functional performance enhancement of student-athletesDesign and implement sport-specific speed and agility programs, as needed by applicable teamsImplement testing methods, based on current literature, to assess strength and fitness levels of athletes at appropriate timesDemonstrate and monitor proper exercise techniques that will be utilized in the strength and conditioning program, including but not limited to, Olympic lifts, strength and power training, speed/movement functional skills, flexibility, and conditioningCollaborate with AU athletic training staff to develop and implement injury prevention programs and accommodate injured student-athletes to facilitate return-to-playEducate student-athletes on proper nutrition, sleep, recovery, and other healthy living aspectsMaintain an environment in the Varsity Strength & Conditioning Center that is marked by the highest priority on safety, attention to detail, respect for all, commitment to improving, and teamworkAdvising:Develop and maintain effective communication with student-athletesSet high standards of ethical and moral conductReinforce academic success as a priorityMonitor academic progress through communication with the head coach and associate director of athleticsEncourage student-athletes to foster a positive relationship with their advisor, faculty, dean, and other areas of academic supportAssist in monitoring eligibility of student-athletesRecruiting:Under the direction of the head coach implement a recruiting plan consistent with Alfred University’s missionCultivate a recruiting networkAssist in maintaining the department’s recruiting contact management systemRecruit student-athletes who coincide with the academic profile of Alfred University studentsMaintain open communication with other Alfred University coaches regarding shared prospectsBe knowledgeable about admissions and financial aid processesAssist the head coach in meeting recruiting goalsAssist in ensuring the Varsity Strength & Conditioning Room is organized and presentableProfessional Development:Maintain active membership in professional sport and strength & conditioning organizationsPursue formal and informal educational opportunitiesParticipate in department professional development seminarsCivic Engagement:Promote the sport in area communitiesEstablish and maintain a positive relationship with interested segments of the community (e.g. youth groups, civic organizations, media)Program Management:Comply with institutional and departmental policiesBe knowledgeable of and comply with all NCAA, Empire 8, and other affiliate organizations’ rules and regulationsSupervise graduate assistants and student workersWork collaboratively with department staffManage applicable equipment, uniforms, and facilitiesAssist in the general maintenance of the Varsity Strength & Conditioning CenterMaintain professional coach-athlete relationshipsDevelop a positive relationship with alumni and parents of current and prospective student-athletesOther Duties & Responsibilities:Assist with department initiativesSupport and assist in creating intersections for faculty, staff and students that will assist in transforming people’s livesSupport and assist in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, and studentsMaintain a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, therefore welcoming and supporting all faculty, staff and students and expanding access to the AU experienceMaintain a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environmentParticipate in all required assigned training, including safety training and will comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocolsEffective written and oral communication skillsContribute to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assignedQualifications-Education & Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Formal Education:Bachelor’s degree is required, a master’s degree is preferred with preference in education, health science, exercise science, sport management, or related fieldAt the time of employment, required to have current SCCC certification through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association or CSCA through the National Strength and Conditioning AssociationRequired CPR/First Aid/AED certificationExperience:A minimum of four years as a collegiate baseball student-athlete and/or coach is requiredDemonstrated successful recruiting and retention of student-athletes, preferably at NCAA Division III, is requiredMust have a minimum of two years of strength and conditioning experienceAdditional Knowledge/Skills:Proven organizational skills as well as a recognizable commitment to student growth and academic achievementAn overall knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations is requiredThe successful applicant must be a person of integrity, high ethical standards, have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and have a commitment to teamworkCompetence with technology resources and a current U.S. driver’s license are vital to fulfilling the responsibilities of this positionFirst Aid, AED, and CPR certification is required by the start dateThe candidate must be willing to work nights and weekendsPhysical Demands & Work Environment:This position requires physical activity and the ability to lift 50 pounds. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate proper exercise techniques and verbally instruct student-athletes in functional movement and sport-specific exercises.Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when required. Stairs and uneven surfaces may be present; artificial lifts, etc. may or may not be available. The position requires the incumbent to walk outdoors in all types of weather to other buildings, offices, and athletic facilities located on the campus and competition sites.
