Across the Culham and South Yorkshire sites, we combine a suite of unique testing facilities and capabilities for advanced engineering and world-leading research for international and UK fusion programmes.Across all the groups and activities within FT, the following themes remain common:Developing and/or incubating new technologies and capabilities to support the commercialisation of Fusion.An increasing focus on verification and qualification, by digital, analytical, deterministic, and probabilistic techniques.Up-scaling activities, from micro-scale verification to prototypical-scale qualification.Serving a dual role as both service provider to and informed customer for commercial Fusion.Ensuring specialist recruitment and training satisfy a broad range of Fusion stakeholder needs.The role of Fusion Technology Support Technician is based at the Fusion Technology Facility (FTF) in Yorkshire. The role holder will be responsible for supporting the research activities of various UKAEA divisions operating a diverse range of fusion related projects at FTF. The scope of the support activities is broad, and the role holder will be expected to actively diversify into new areas of technical expertise and to become the main point of contact regarding experimental technical support for internal and external stakeholders.This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.The RoleSupport a wide range of experimental test rigs in the FTF work hall, with a general focus on materials testing and validation. These rigs have different support requirements requiring a broad range of skills to operate and maintain, requiring the role holder to apply and update their own specialist knowledge, and to source and manage external expertise when needed.Maintenance of equipment within the FTF work hall, including determination of maintenance schedules and supporting external suppliers as required.Preparation of mechanical and analytical samples including but not limited to machining, grinding and polishing and quality checks.Instrumenting of samples for a diverse range of experimental conditions, including strain-gauging, wiring, soldering, mechanical fixing and jig development.Perform tests and analysis utilising standard and bespoke laboratory equipment.Maintain the database storage system for all research rigs and ensure that personnel are trained on use of the database.Produce appropriate reports on testing results and analytical studies on materials, including details of sample preparation and testing conditions.Assist with training and supervision of visitors, students and new staff.Assist with project and experimental planning and implementation.Ensure quality and assurance is maintained and relevant data is logged into the appropriate database.Attend and contribute to group meetings and planning meetings as required.Act as the main point of contact and liaison with site services and external suppliers for maintenance schedules, calibration etc.Work with scientists and engineers to understand end-user requirements. Contribute to the development and delivery of new and existing test facilities.Maintain timely and clear communication about progress.Contribute to improving best practices and quality standards within the team and across the organisation.Promote UKAEA’s values, championing a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion.Work in accordance with UKAEA policy and undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties requested by Management.QualificationsEssential Requirements:Degree or HNC in a relevant engineering discipline, e.g., materials science, process engineering, electronics/electrical engineering etc.Experience with risk assessments and safe systems of work.Excellent communication skills.Previous experience working in an engineering laboratory or workshop.Practical experience with physical instrumentation systems and an understanding of sensor applications, data acquisition and data logging.An appreciation of basic electronics principles, electrical systems and electrical safety.A willingness to learn new technical skills and to be adaptable in a multi-disciplinary environment.Ability to analyse and summarise data, and to present to a diverse audience.Experience of risk assessment and safe systems of work.Ability to delegate work and to manage sub-contractors.DesirableControl & Instrumentation experienceExperience with strain-gauges, thermocouples and solderingExperience with consumer grade desktop 3D printersAdditional InformationA full list of our benefits can be found hereWe welcome applications from under-represented groups, particularly individuals from black and other ethnic minority backgrounds, people with disabilities, and women.
