Job Description

The Steven and Ann Ames Curator of Drawings and Prints oversees the museum’s collection of drawings and prints and propose and organize collection displays and loan exhibitions (in any medium), including the writing and preparation of related scholarly catalogues, brochures, and didactic texts.The Steven and Ann Ames Curator of Drawings and Prints works closely with other curatorial staff and widely across departments in the museum, in particular Conservation, Education, Exhibitions and Collections Management, Publications, Advancement, and Research Resources.Responsibilities:Oversee the growth of the Whitney’s drawing and print holdings through gifts and purchasesOversee the museum’s Acquisition Committee on Drawings and PrintsHelp to define the Museum’s collection strategy and display methodology in consultation with the Chief CuratorCollaboratively shape the scholarly program and research functions of the Museum’s Sondra Gilman Study Center for works on paper.Development of educational programs; and fundraisingCultivate external relationships with artists; trustees and various patron groups; members of the press; and colleagues at other institutionsWork closely with other curatorial staff and departments in the museum, in particular Conservation, Education, Exhibitions and Collection Management, Publications, Advancement, and Research ResourcesApprove loans; serve on Museum’s Replication Committee; work with artists, scholars, and other interested parties to access the collection; undertake special research projects for the collection and acquisitions as needed; represent the Museum within the scholarly community through participation in panels, symposia, and other forums; supervise administrative matters related to these activitiesParticipate in and/or lead cross-departmental working groups on a variety of topics related to the CollectionSupervise a Curatorial AssistantSupervise the Works on Paper Study Center Fellow alongside the Sondra Gilman Curator of PhotographyRequirements:Knowledge of Google Docs Editor Suite, Microsoft Teams, Asana, QuickBooks, Adobe Photoshop, and TMS desirableThis position requires strong expertise in 20th- and 21st-century American art; a specialty in early to mid-twentieth-century art is preferred but not required.10+ years of experience, including a distinguished record of exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions in the fieldM.A. in art history; Ph.D. preferredCompensation & Benefits:Estimated salary range of $125,000-$140,000 per annumMedical, Dental, Vision, 403(B) electionsGenerous PTO benefitsCommuter benefits - parking and mass transitAdmission to world-renowned museums across the city and nationallyPet insurance and discounted membership for CitibikeNot sure you meet 100% of our qualifications?
