Regular hours of work are scheduled Mondays to Fridays between 8:30 am - 6:30 pm. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department's needs. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. The position is located at the New Westminster campus; however, the successful candidate must be available for occasional work at the Coquitlam campus. And we're looking for passionate, motivated people to join us in making one of Canada's best colleges even better.The RoleTo coordinate the operational and educational activities in the Mathematics Labs, ensuring that such activities complement the pedagogical objectives of the Department's curricula, and to provide mathematics tutorial assistance, evaluation and supervision of students and Mathematics Lab Facilitators in the Mathematics Labs. Provides client-centred service on a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups.Responsibilities1. Performs all duties of a Mathematics Lab Facilitator as required.2. Supervises Math Lab Facilitatorsa. Hires, trains, and evaluates Mathematics Lab Facilitators in accordance with the collective agreement and procedures established by the Dean.b. Coordinates and approves Mathematics Lab Facilitator staffing levels including vacation, professional development, etc. in accordance with the collective agreement.c. Works with the Chair to build tutorial and open lab schedules for Mathematics Lab Facilitators that are in accordance with the collective agreement and established practice.d. Establishes and monitors work practices and applies the collective agreement to daily decision making, based on established practices.e. Oversees day-to day operations of the Mathematics Labs.f. Plans staff orientation.3. Works with the Dean and faculty to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the Mathematics Labsa. Coordinates Mathematics lab activities to meet the requirements of course objectives as established by curricular approval processes.b. Works with the Dean and Chair to ensure open Mathematics Lab Hours and scheduled activities meet the requirements of course objectives as established by curricular approval processes.c. Makes recommendations to the Chair with respect to ongoing curricular activities in the Mathematics labs and proposes new activities.d. Demonstrates leadership with respect to the design and implementation of innovative lab activities, subject to the curricular approval of the Mathematics faculty.e. Prepares materials for communication of Mathematics Lab schedules and activities for the information of students, staff and faculty.f. Schedules Mathematics Lab Facilitators to inform students about the Mathematics Lab facilities both in class and during the new student orientation week.g. Updates open Mathematics Lab Hours and the contact information of Mathematics Lab Facilitators on the College website.4. Coordinates a variety of operational/administrative functions in support of the laboratory operation.a. Maintains records related to work schedules, vacation, professional development and auxiliary staffing.b. Develops and maintains a variety of statistics and generates statistical reports related to Math Lab and mathematics tutorial issues and communicates this data to the Dean and Chair.c. Ensures that procedures are in place for student access to calculators and computers in the Mathematics Labs and ensures that equipment is in good working order.d. Ensures that mathematics resources for students (including textbooks, answer keys and other archived materials) are organized and accessible.e. Makes requests for capital budget items as needed to support Mathematics Lab operations.f. Monitors and purchases consumables.5. Performs other duties as required.a. Schedules Mathematics Lab Facilitators to help faculty invigilate exams as required while ensuring the Mathematics Labs are adequately staffed.b. Accesses Banner to extract contact information of students to remind them to return overdue items borrowed from the Mathematics Labs.To Be Successful in this Role You Will NeedGood working knowledge of the English language (verbal and written).Bachelor of Arts or Science in Mathematics from a recognized post-secondary educational institution. Some Graduate level study in Mathematics or Education is preferred.At least 2 years of experience teaching college-level mathematics to groups of students.Demonstrated ability to effectively convey mathematics problem solving techniques to post secondary students.Working knowledge of current mathematics software and graphing technology.Demonstrated ability to maintain current knowledge in the field of post-secondary Mathematics education.Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as establish priorities and achieve deadlines.Demonstrated ability to communicate courteously and effectively in writing, in person or on the telephone with faculty, students, staff, and administrators, as well as maintain good working relations with other employees.Strong interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to develop, establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty and administrators.Proven ability to develop and implement procedures and documentation.Proven ability to recognize, analyze and resolve problems.Demonstrated supervisory skills; organizational skills, proven ability to plan, schedule work flow and schedule, train and motivate employees; ability to work in an ever-changing environment.Supervising in a unionized environment would be an assetLink to Full Position ProfileEquity StatementDouglas College is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive and equitable learning and working environment.
