Job Description:Guardian Australia is part of Guardian News & Media (GNM), publisher of As a leading global media organisation, we are renowned for our pioneering independent journalism and our award-winning digital products.We are seeking a US/UK site editor to edit key Guardian homepages between approximately midnight and 8am UK time and also to commission, edit and produce international stories as part of the International team in Sydney.You'll work on:Key responsibilities and accountabilitiesEdit the Guardian UK and US home pages, updating and refreshing as required to keep them relevant to their target audiencesWork with the International news team to help ensure key international stories are commissioned, edited, subbed and launched while UK and US teams are offlineWork closely with the Guardian Australia team to ensure key stories are covered and adapt to changing news prioritiesSupport the Guardian night editor and night production editors (online) in London when they are presentLive blog and write news stories when necessaryWork with the UK newsletters team on production of the First Edition newsletterCover news in the Asia-Pacific regionBe available to the New York and West Coast offices as well as North America correspondents to handle late-breaking US stories, updates and edits to US stories and the home page, as directed by the International editor in SydneyMonitor UK morning news sources and adjust the site to the UK news agendaBrief and hand over to the Guardian digital editors and international and national desks in London at the end of the shiftMonitor the news wires, other websites/TV channels for international and UK news storiesCommission foreign correspondents when a story breaks on their patch, and serve as a contact point for them during UK out-of-office hours as directed by the International news editor in SydneyCome up with ideas for stories and devise innovative and interesting ways of telling themEnsure all potential legal issues resolved prior to publishingLiaise with audience team to optimise timing, keywords, page furniture and story placement to maximise trafficYou'll bring….Knowledge and experienceSignificant journalistic experience, with an excellent grasp of international newsExperience of working in a fast changing and high-pressure environment, preferably on a news websiteUnderstanding of the unique time pressures involved in digital journalismThorough understanding of Guardian valuesExcellent understanding of media lawSkills / behavioursEditing, writing, blogging and production skillsThe ability to deliver feedback to correspondents and to accept feedback from senior editorsAbility to plan for news events and projectsGood commissioning skillsGood news judgementSpeed and accuracyEfficient, decisive and persuasiveDiplomatic team playerConfident and assertiveEnthusiastic and proactiveFlexible and adaptableAbout working at Guardian Australia…Hybrid workingEmployee assistance program (EAP) to support employee wellbeingPaid volunteer leaveDedicated diversity and inclusion employee groups, action plans (including our) and cultural competency training * Guardian digital subscriptionFor more information please view the full job description .This role is being offered on a full-time permanent basis, located in our Head office in Sydney.To apply for this position, please apply online and upload your résumé (maximum three pages) plus covering letter as one document.
