Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic, committed and compassionate Healthcare Assistants to work in a challenging and dynamic unit –Thomas Cook Children’s Critical Care.
This is our paediatric Critical Care unit caring for children and young people with life-threatening illnesses. You will be required to help maintain a safe, hygienic and welcoming environment within the department and provide other general duties to ensure the effective running of the department. You will have excellent interpersonal and customer care skills, the ability to prioritise your own workload and enjoy working as a team member. This is a vital role for the safe and effective running of this service which requires hard work, dedication and a passion for maintaining high standards.
We seek interested individuals who want towork in a paediatric environment with children, young people and their families.
1. To assist and support the nursing team
2. To clean equipment used by nursing and medical staff and ensure ward is restocked with equipment and supplies as required by all staff.
3. To assist with administrative and clerical/other clinical duties to ensure the effective running of the ward/department
4. To supervise support and facilitate the training of new healthcare assistants
5. To maintain own personal development with support from ward / departmental manager.
6. To assist with ordering and stock levels of non-stock items.
7. To liaise with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the environment is maintained to a high standard and all documentation

1. Clinical Practice
- To participate in maintaining standards of hygiene, cleanliness and infection control, reporting problems as appropriate
- To ensure that equipment is clean at all times, stored safely when not in use and report faults as appropriate
- To assist in setting up and preparing patient areas appropriately to the clinical area (including sterile trolleys or specific equipment in specific clinical areas).
- To ensure that ward stock levels of linen, sterile supplies are maintained at all times in conjunction with the sister in charge/ward manager.
- To assist ward staff with general collection/delivery of items necessary to ensure effective operational management of ward/department
- To collect blood products and deliver specimens as required
- To implement infection control/health and safety procedures relevant to CSSD and other equipment
- To accompany the qualified nurse during the transport of children to various departments within the Trust.
- To receive visitors to the unit.
- To assist in the maintenance of up to date, comprehensive and accurate records in accordance with current legal requirements.
- To assist in the maintenance and safekeeping of patients property in line with Trust policy
- To assist in the admission and discharge of patients.
- To cleaning and labelling equipment in line with the decontamination policy
- To clean bed spaces and label clean in line with the decontamination policy
- To check commodes are clean and labelled in line with the decontamination policy
- To ensuring alcohol rubs are replenished across the ward and outside the entrance to the ward
1. Customer Care/Administration
- To ensure that all parents and relatives are welcomed and orientated to the ward environment
- To assist with clerical and ward administrative duties, including data management, photocopying, transporting of equipment/data/ paperwork to other departments as directed by the sister in charge or Senior Nurse only
- To provide clear and effective information and communication, both verbally and in writing. Promptly referring enquiries to the relevant person
- To maintain confidentiality at all times, in and out of the hospital environment
- To demonstrate an awareness of the different cultural, ethnic and religious needs
- To ensure and prepare a sufficient supply of admission packs and other standard forms relevant to the ward. To distribute post appropriately to individuals.
- To answer the telephone/personnel inquiries courteously and liaise appropriately.
- To run errands at the request of the nurse in charge or Senior Nurse.
- To prepare milk feeds in the special milk kitchen and train other staff members in this following training.
1. Personal and Professional Development
- To ensure that you receive expectations of your work from ward staff at the beginning of the shift.
- To adhere to, and work within the code of conduct for clinical support workers at King’s College Hospital
- To be able to identify with support own development needs, completing a competency document and learning objectives within a specified time frame and as agreed by manager. To actively participate in annual individual performance review
- To ensure own attendance at mandatory study days and training (BLS, manual handling etc.) as required by their team leader or Senior Nurse
- To share own clinical skills and teach less experienced staff
- To teach new HCAs and staff the correct use of designated equipment as appropriate.
- To comply with the Trust guidelines on E-rostering and implement own requests via employee on line
1. Management
- To manage an agreed workload with support from colleagues and senior staff
- To supervise and support new Healthcare Assistants
- To work within and support the multidisciplinary team, contributing ideas toward future developments
- To maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all areas within the care group and associated clinical areas within the Trust
- To participate in reflection and or clinical supervision sessions as provided
- To observe personal and collective responsibility for resource management
- To demonstrate initiative in managing own workload and maintaining the clinical environment, able to anticipate relevant clinical and administrative changes or problems and respond proactively to these
- To observe a general duty of care for the health, safety and wellbeing of self, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital
- To be responsible with others for any specific risk management associated with the post, reporting and taking appropriate actions as necessary
