The National Infrastructure Commission is looking for an organised Events and Engagement Officer to plan and deliver a range of events of different formats and sizes.

About the National Infrastructure Commission

By joining the National Infrastructure Commission, you’ll play a key role in delivering independent advice to government on the UK’s long-term infrastructure needs. We do this to help support sustainable economic growth across the whole of the UK, improve competitiveness, support climate resilience and the transition to net zero carbon emissions, and ultimately improve the quality of life of UK citizens.

In fulfilling its purpose and objectives, the Commission:

  • Sets a long term agenda – identifying the UK’s major economic infrastructure needs, and the pathways to address them,
  • Develops fresh approaches and ideas – basing our independent policy recommendations on rigorous analysis, and
  • Focuses on driving change – building consensus on our policy recommendations, and monitoring government progress on their delivery.

The Commission's core responsibilities include:

  • Producing a National Infrastructure Assessment once every five years, setting out the Commission’s assessment of long-term infrastructure needs with recommendations to government on how to meet them;
  • Carrying out in-depth studies into the UK’s most pressing infrastructure challenges, making recommendations to government, and
  • Monitoring the government’s progress in delivering infrastructure projects and programmes recommended by the NIC.

We are a small, friendly organisation. We work to support the Commissioners to push for action on and endorse our recommendations and to monitor government’s progress in implementing them.

Job description

This role is at the heart of the National Infrastructure Commission’s work to influence important government policy on net zero, climate resilience and to support regional economic growth.

You will work across the Secretariat at all levels and with Commissioners to ensure we are delivering high quality events of different formats and scales. This is a hands-on role, with responsibility for planning and delivering high profile launch events both online and in-person, including a dual-site, hybrid launch of our flagship National Infrastructure Assessment due to publish in the autumn. You will also organise smaller scale roundtables and presentations, online and in-person around the UK, working closely with the stakeholder and strategic engagement lead and policy teams to deliver high quality discussions to a small but targeted group of senior stakeholders. You will also develop and maintain an effective contact database to support all the Commission’s event and stakeholder engagement activity.

The role sits within the Commission Secretariat’s Monitoring and Implementation Team, which is part of the Policy Group. It will also involve close working with the Communications Team on larger launch events.

The Secretariat is led by our Chief Executive, supported by a Senior Management Team, comprising the Chief Economist, Directors of Policy and Chief Operating Officer. The Commission is chaired by Sir John Armitt, with eight other Commissioners at present.

The postholder will be required to travel around the UK to deliver these events. This is likely to involve travelling early morning or working in the evenings or on occasion staying overnight. You will be expected to travel to the Commission’s London office up to two times per month to help deliver in person events and there is likely to be significant levels of travel around the launch of the Assessment in the autumn, though there is no need to have a driving licence or own your own vehicle. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered in accordance with Commission policy.

Responsibilities

  • Organising and delivering a range of events and engagements for the Commission including online, in person and hybrid launch events, policy roundtables, and visits to towns and cities in the UK. Tasks include:
    • Working with the head of communications and stakeholder and strategic engagement lead to clarify the format, objectives and expectations for upcoming events and engagements
    • Developing and maintaining a detailed project plan and timeline for all events and engagements, liaising with diary managers on event timings as required
    • Communicating project plan and expectations clearly to policy teams, senior management, Commissioners, head of communications and stakeholder and strategic engagement lead where required
    • Developing template briefing and presentation materials, working with policy teams to ensure materials are produced to a sufficient standard and support the aims and objectives of the event
    • Sourcing venues for physical events and liaising with them on all aspects of the event management including catering requirements, room layout and audio visual requirements
    • Preparing invitations for speakers and attendees, managing responses and liaising with offices to secure speakers
  • Managing mass mailings for both event invitations and the dissemination and distribution of publications, working with policy teams to develop dissemination and invitation lists, and ensuring this is well coordinated with other stakeholder activity managed by the Communications and Monitoring and Implementation teams
  • Developing and maintaining the contact databases on MailChimp and Excel, working with policy teams, communications, private office and the stakeholder and strategic engagement lead to keep the database up to date. Acting as main point of contact for the Commission team on all database matters
  • Supporting the Monitoring and Implementation team with its wider functions including supporting with securing senior level meetings.

Skills and Experience

Essential technical skills and experience

  • Experience of delivering events, stakeholder engagements, visits, conferences, or similar types of activities
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to manage a busy and varied workload
  • Good written and spoken communication skills
  • Experience managing contact databases and mass mailing systems including MailChimp
  • Experience using MS Teams Live and managing events using Eventbrite or similar platforms

Desirable technical skills and experience

  • Experience of or interest in infrastructure policy

Location and Hybrid Working

The role will be based at National Infrastructure Commission, One Embankment, Neville Street, Leeds. NIC employees work a hybrid pattern, spending 2 days a week (pro rata) in the office, on average.

Please note this role will involve UK travel including ability to travel to and participate in full-day engagements in different parts of the UK and travel to the Commission’s London office for up to two times per month or as required to deliver the events (expenses paid in accordance with Commission policy).
