Job Description

SLR has an exciting opportunity for a Chartered Geotechnical Engineer to work with its growing Transport Engineering team in the UK. SLR’s engineering team boasts a wealth of expertise within diverse sectors including the built environment, infrastructure, power, mining and waste sectors.

The successful applicant will join at Technical Director level and actively lead on geotechnical design execution, management and delivery on a range of projects for new and existing Clients, principally within the Built Environment and Infrastructure Sectors. They will also be expected to support the business development activities of the wider engineering team.

This position provides an exciting opportunity to join a diverse and experienced team of geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists in a leading multi-national engineering and environmental consultancy and to take an active role in the future growth and development of our business in the traditional highway engineering sector as well as the ever-growing active travel market. The appointee would ideally be based at one of our existing offices in Manchester, London, Bristol or Nottingham.

About your role

The successful candidate will work independently and within existing teams to lead and deliver geotechnical design inputs for a wide range of highway and infrastructure projects, as well as supporting the development of new and existing business.
You will act as a project manager, write proposals and manage clients, as well as the interface with Clients and/or Overseeing Authorities. You will provide workload to others within the team and in related technical disciplines and will also be expected to mentor and coach other engineers and engineering geologists, including technical review of engineering reports, drawings and advice issued to Clients.
The successful candidate will ensure compliance with recognised engineering standards, technical guidance and associated legislation and will be expected to keep abreast of geotechnical innovation and any related policy or regulatory change impacting the highway and infrastructure sectors, both nationally within the UK and internationally.
As a senior member of SLR’s engineering team, you will have input into the strategic direction, planning and development of the team, creating new opportunities and prospects, enhancing and broadening team capacity and capability, recruiting new staff, identifying target markets and developing future strategies.
The successful candidate will work with other SLR colleagues across a range of disciplines including Civil Engineering, Transport Engineering and Planning, Land Quality, Geology, Hydrogeology, as well as some of our specialist environmental services teams (e.g. Air Quality, Noise and Climate).

About you

If you are interested in this opportunity we would love to hear from you. In order to succeed we'd envisage that you would be an established geotechnical professional ideally holding chartered status and with expertise within the Highways and Infrastructure sectors; and would be able to demonstrate:
  • Relevant first degree and post graduate qualification (Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geology or similar);
  • Chartered Member of a relevant professional institution with at least ten-years post chartership experience in earthworks design for highway / infrastructure projects and geotechnical design of bridge and earth retaining structures (sufficient to fulfil requirements for Designers Geotechnical Advisor under DMRB CD 622);
  • Excellent geotechnical and analytical design skill
  • Past experience of reporting to DMRB CD 622 and liaising with Overseeing Organisations, acting as the Designer’s Geotechnical Advisor (incl. National Highways, Transport Scotland and Local Authorities)
  • Proven business development capabilities, with an established track record in building and maintaining good working relationships with Clients and in winning consultancy work;
  • Proven leadership skills, with past experience in mentoring and leading a team of specialist professional engineering staff in a project or consultancy environment and achieving or exceeding financial, project performance and health and safety goals.
