Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:

Year 1

The first year is settling into London Underground. Mainly working on the fundamental engineering principles at our purpose build training centre in Acton.

Year 2

Your second year will be where you get hands on in the business learning from experienced train maintainers from across the lines. You will be expected to follow teams building up your confidence and practical knowledge.

Year 3

With the fundamentals of engineering and the hands-on practical experience your final year is where you continue rotating around placements while completing your qualifications. The qualifications are made up of knowledge questions and evidence of the work you have done. At the end you will present your best work to an external engineering institute give final sign off that you are a competent rolling stock engineering.

Where can this career take me?

  • Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into a Train maintainer position which could lead to further career development opportunities such as Advanced Train Maintainer or Team leader positions.
  • At the end of the apprenticeship, you will be at an Engineering Technician professional standard while there is no requirement this can be built upon to achieve Chartership status in the future.
  • You’ll also have opportunities to complete additional training courses. These will vary from soft skills training to technical skills training.

What training and support will you get?

You will be working towards a Level 3 qualification in Railway Engineering Technician (Rolling stock).

Typically, you will be required to attend Conel college, as block placements to complete 4 mandatory units that make up your Level 3 Knowledge qualification, the remaining 3 Units will be delivered by your Assessor.

Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities, and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager. You’ll also be connected to a ‘buddy’ who will be a more experienced apprentice from the scheme.
