Job Description

Support Worker Positions Available; Immediate start.

We specialise in providing care and support to children and young people with Learning Disabilities, Autism and Behaviours that challenge including social and emotional difficulties, children facing significant trauma, attachment challenges and loss.

Our home is large and spacious with ample room for our young people to enjoy activates. The home is based in a tree-lined North Finchley residential street making it a very peaceful environment for our young people to live in. We are very close to the high street shops and cafes in addition to a leisure centre, cinema and bowling alley.

The young people we care for require 24 hour support to ensure their needs are met and to ensure they remain safe. This will involve supporting young people with personal care, medication administration, to attend health appointments, access activities, education and to maintain relationships with their family and friends. This role also requires candidates to have excellent reporting and recording skills. As part of your role you may also need to attend multidisciplinary meetings and reviews for young people and advocate on their behalf.

The model of support this home uses is Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). Experience working with this model is desirable but not essential as advanced training will be provided.

At Seva Childcare we are committed to safeguarding our young people from any abuse or harm. As part of the wider safeguarding system for children, described in Working Together to Safeguard Children 2015, Seva Childcare work with educational settings, Social Services, the Police, NHS and other health care professionals to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. All members of staff working for us have a responsibility to be aware of the procedures to be followed if they are worried a child or young person is being abused or is at risk of harm. Staff in regular contact with young people must be well placed to notice signs of physical, sexual, emotional abuse, neglect, behavioural change and/or a failure to develop as expected.

A level 3 in Residential Childcare or above is desirable. For candidates who do not already have this qualification there will an expectation to sign up for this; the cost of which is covered by our organisation.

This role requires every applicant to undertake an enhanced criminal records check (DBS) and to provide details of references for all current and previous care related roles. These checks must come back with satisfactory results before any offer of employment is made.

Purpose of the role:

· To provide safe and stimulating direct support to children and young people with disabilities and complex health needs, in a range of settings including the community, in universal or mainstream clubs and in the child’s home

· To engage and assist children to learn and develop their interests, skills and independence whilst their parents and carers have a break from caring.

· To provide personal care and support to individual children as per care plans, risk assessments and any other relevant individual plans

· To engage with parents and professionals to ensure the child or young person has the best outcomes and is well supported.

· To be involved in the planning of and delivery of care, sessions and the service as required for us to be graded as ‘Good’ by Ofsted

· To ensure children’ s welfare is paramount, and that child protection polices, and protocols are adhered to at all times by working within the parameters of safeguarding children, risk assessment, health and safety and other legislation relevant to the setting

Duties and Responsibilities

1. To deliver of a broad programme of quality, stimulating play opportunities including sports, games, arts, crafts, activities that are fun, creative and offer the children developmental experiences, this will include creative session planning and monitoring.

2. To work on site at Seva Homes (subject to qualification/ experience), in the family home and in the community as part of a rota, this may include early morning, day, evening, and weekends as needed

3. To shift lead sessions as part of the rota if required.

4. To provide personal care, as per the child’s individual care plan and any other individual plans for example: manual handling, risk assessments, medicine administration and management, behaviour plans

5. To be a key worker allocated as requested, being the family contact in the service and responsible for maintaining accurate up to date records for key children

6. To listen to children, respect their values, beliefs and identity.

7. To input to planning with other professionals (including Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, YOS, therapists and Social Workers) to support programs design to enhance the child or young person’s development and wellbeing.

8. To deliver support in a safe and healthy environment following legislation relating to Health, safety and welfare of the children and staff is complied with always

9. To support a child introduction into other less specialist settings, this may include working with mainstream clubs and activities to assist them to get to know a child as part of transition.

10. To follow travel training programmes as required, this may include delivery of travel training

11. To keep up to date child records and complete any service required reports such as post session individual logs or incident reports in a timely way to ensure effective communication with colleagues and parents about targets, achievements, concerns and areas for development

12. To assist in the preparation of the play sessions/activities and the outside areas and to clear and tidy the inside and outside play/recreation/dining areas at the end of activities or when needed, including taking an active role for moving furniture and equipment, when necessary.

13. To prepare and serve food for children/young people adhering to hygiene regulations. This could include snacks, meals or as part of the activity program

14. To undertake risk assessments and ensure relevant action is taken to minimise, reduce or remove risks to children, this includes knowing how to use equipment and aids safely in accordance to risk assessment and manuals/ instructions

15. To attend and take an active role in handover meetings, supervision, appraisals, team meetings, planning meetings and other forums to share information about individual children or service needs, and to participate in the development and review of the settings practice, policies and procedures.

16. To safely support children to manage their emotions using a wide range of de-escalation techniques, low arousal approaches and supportive and effective behaviour management skills. Where necessary using training techniques provided including de-escalation, breakaway techniques and physical intervention to support children and staff to remain safe at all times and ensure the safeguarding of others.

17. To ensure the safeguarding of children at all times. To support the home to embed open cultures of safeguarding practises and to follow all safeguarding and whistle blowing policies at all times. To ensure open and transparent communication with team members and management to further develop and embed effective safeguarding cultures within the home.

18. Undertake other duties as directed by management providing, they fall within the scope and range as indicated by the above paragraphs and are commensurate with the grade of the post.
